Climate soilsTENURE, VGGT, CLIMATE CHANGE AND SOIL MANAGEMENT

Download to read offline

The presentation will highlight how the sustainable management of natural resources,
including land, forests, and water, can contribute to address climate-change related issues (i.e. soil
degradation, desertification, and deforestation), focusing on how the VGGT, by improving tenure
security, help create the incentives for the implementation of such sustainable practices. Emphasis
will be made on how tenure security can enable rural populations and indigenous communities to
apply climate smart natural resource management practices, which allow to adapt to climate
change effects, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

  1. 1. Tenure, VGGT, Climate Change and Soil Management Climate and Environment Division Land and Water Division 5 October 2017, 14.00-15.30
  2. 2. Key issues, challenges and opportunities 1. The VGGT should contribute to the long term sustainable management of natural resouces. 2. Lack of quantitative evidence that more secure tenure would ensure sustainable practices how tat would affect climate change. 3. Linking the land governance policies with natural resource management and climate change policies. 4. Opportunity to link VGGT to VGSSM to capitalize on synergies.
  3. 3. Main lessons learned/recommendations 1. Implementation at the country level is as important as the substance of the VGGT. This momentum should be used to capitalize on expand VGGT implementation in relation to climate change and sustainable soil management. 2. Producing evidence to link land tenure, climate change and sustainable soil management takes time.
  4. 4. Next steps – the way forward 1. Capitalizing on the existing studies to generate the necessary data. 2. Breaking the legal barriers to apply responsible governance of natural resources.
