16. Way forward to the SOC map

  1. 1. The Asian Soil Partnership - The way forward -
  2. 2. Every year we select some activities for immediate execution at the regional level from the …In parallel, each country implements activities in the plan at the national level Available at http://www.fao.org/fileadmin/user_uplo ad/GSP/WSD2016/Teeshirt/RIP__1_.pdf
  3. 3. Activities for immediate execution 2017 - Implementation of the Voluntary Guidelines for Sustainable Soil Management (Pillar 1)
  4. 4. Activities for immediate execution 2017 - Implementation of the Voluntary Guidelines for Sustainable Soil Management (Pillar 1) - Volunteer Soil Doctors programme (Pillar 2)
  5. 5. Activities for immediate execution 2017 - Implementation of the Voluntary Guidelines for Sustainable Soil Management (Pillar 1) - Volunteer Soil Doctors programme (Pillar 2) - SEALNET (Pillar 5)
  6. 6. Activities for immediate execution 2017 - Implementation of the Voluntary Guidelines for Sustainable Soil Management (Pillar 1) - Volunteer Soil Doctors programme (Pillar 2) - SEALNET (Pillar 5) - SOC map (Pillar 4)
  7. 7. Activities for immediate execution 2017 - Implementation of the Voluntary Guidelines for Sustainable Soil Management (Pillar 1) - Volunteer Soil Doctors programme (Pillar 2) - SEALNET (Pillar 5) - SOC map (Pillar 4) - Soil Atlas for Asia (Pillar 4)
  8. 8. Soil Atlas for Asia: AIMS - To raise the awareness of the general public, land managers/owners, policy makers, politicians, NGOs and other scientific communities of the importance of soil in Asia - To support policies and instruments for investment, agriculture, environmental issues, climate change, development and aid assistance, urban planning… - To provide educational material to schools and universities to support learning - Baseline for further assessments More info at https://www.slideshare.net/ExternalEvents/the-first-ever- soil-atlas-of-asia-a-partnership-to-raise-awareness-of-a-critical-resource
  9. 9. Soil Atlas for Asia: TARGETS - High quality reference work on the soils of Asia - Informative, easy to read, graphically stimulating - Not aimed at soil scientists - Written for general public, policy makers, environmental science, educationalists, etc. - Should lead to a better understanding and appreciation of the importance of soil across Asia
  10. 10. Soil Atlas for Asia: APPROACH - MAPS - Small scale datasets - Base: JRC Soil Atlas + Harmonized World Soil Database (HWSD) + North Central Asia SOTER - Updated, where possible by country contributions - Soil mapping units – use of dominant soil types - WRB 2015 for soil names - Key priorities: texture, pH, organic carbon, water storage capacity, etc. for soil characteristics maps
  11. 11. Soil Atlas for Asia This is a long-term commitment (usually 3 years for completing an Atlas) It is a joint publication: JRC (EC), GSP (FAO) with inputs from scientists from Asia, Europe and other regions Leading author: Ms. Lucrezia Caon (FAO) Each country to nominate an expert for the editorial board (ACTIVE AUTHOR and LEADING PERSON FOR HIS COUNTRY) We are looking for contributing authors on the several topics covered by the Atlas If you are interested in contributing, please contact Ms. Lucrezia Caon at lucrezia.caon@fao.org
  12. 12. Planned Activities 2018 Continue to implement activities started in 2017…. Pillar 1 (Sustainable Soil Management) • Creation of databases on SSM practices, priority areas of intervention, etc. (as per the activity in the implementation plan) • Development of SSM and soil degradation indicators Pillar 2 (Investment, Technical and Scientific cooperation, Policy, Education, Awareness and Extension in soil • MOODLE (open source Educational Platform) • Online platform for policy information sharing (link to activity 2.2.2 and the global implementation plan for Pillar 2)
  13. 13. Planned Activities 2018 Pillar 3 (Research) • Identification of key stakeholders and potential donors at national, regional and global levels. Identification of key partners and stakeholders for addressing emerging priorities, and establish a network of collabroation (Activity 3.4.1) Writing of joint proposals and mobilization of financial resources (link to Pillar 1 and 2) Pillar 4 (Soil data and information) • Select soil benchmark data for soil description and monitoring purposes. Basic soil data are evaluated using pedo-transfer functions or other models, to develop spatial layers for soil indicators (Activity 4.3.1) - it build on the creation of National Soil Information Systems - contribute to SoilSTAT
  14. 14. Planned Activities 2018 Pillar 5 (Harmonization) • Collection of reference soil profile databases for the creation of soil museums and training on soil (Activity 5.3.2) • SEALNET focus on: o Performance of the lab (PT) o Capacity building on GLP (good lab practice and quality control) o At least 3 SOP for the labs (ISO system) o Registration of the labs (database creation on the capacity of the labs) Ultimately (Pillar 3): Setting up the Center of Excellence for Soil Research in Asia (CESRA)
  15. 15. Thank you The training is over but… A special thank to the organizers
