  2. 2. FACS • FACS is a research tool useful for measuring any facial expression a human being can make. It is an anatomically based system for comprehensively describing all observable facial movement. • Each observable component of facial movement is called an Action Unit or AU. • All facial expressions can be broken down into their constituent AU’s.

  6. 6. Middle-raised • This can indicate relief ('Whew!'). • It can also indicate anxiety ('Oh no!'). Middle-lowered • This often shows that the person is angry or frustrated. • It can also indicate intense concentration.

Up and down • When we see people we know, we often give a quick single up-down 'eyebrow flash' in recognition and greeting. • This is a common signal across all primates, including monkeys and gorillas.

Looking down • Looking down can thus be a signal of submission. It can also indicate that the person is feeling guilty.   9. 9. Lips • To distinguish genuine smiles from fake smiles, observe the wrinkles in the corner beside the persons eyes. • Also be aware that the eyebrows will slightly dip down as well.
  10. 10. Tight Lipped • By people who have secrets or withholding their true opinions and attitude towards some things. • The tight lipped smile is also used as a polite smile by someone who doesn’t like another person company and doesn’t know how to get rid of them.
  11. 11. Smirk • This is funny one. • Smirking is when someone showing two different emotions on their face. • If you put a piece of paper right through the middle covering a right or left side, you’ll see two different types of emotions on the same face that are expressed in the picture.
  12. 12. Shy smile • This smile was popularly used by Princesses Diana. • This will make the smile look more innocent, juvenile, playful and secretive. Compulsive smile • Suspiciously happy, because they either know something you don’t or they are being fake with everyone to gain something.
  13. 13. Teeth Display • In the hopes of appearing as though they are laughing and playful all the time. • This smile usually woke as it maker the smiling person appear happiness, friendlier and therefore more likeable and easier to approach.
  14. 14. Head Downwards Shrug: • This facial gesture is a clear display of a judgmental, aggressive or negative attitude in the person. Sideways Head • A sign of submissiveness.
  15. 15. Head Upwards • This head position in taken by people who fearlessness, arrogance or superiority. • A way of showing they don’t feel threatened by the person they are talking to.
