Surrealism (hybrid people)

 1. 1. Surrealism
… and the use of photomontage
2. 2. Surrealism
What is it?
.
An art movement - i.e. a philosophy or approach to art-making that creates a particular style of work.
Began after WW1 (1920s) & influenced by psychology.
It’s leader was André Breton. Other artists include Salvador Dali, René Magritte and Max Ernst.
Widely influenced arts, political thought, social theory and philosophy throughout the world.
Expressed in many art forms: visual art, poetry, literature, films, music.
Salvador Dali, The Persistence of Memory, 1931
3. 3. Features of Surrealism
Central importance of the subconscious.
Dreams and the dream world regarded as typifying this.
Games and strategies for investigation and creation used to introduce chance and unlikely outcomes.
Incongruous, odd, bizarre elements & juxtapositions to capture the strange nature of the dream/subconscious world.
Max Ernst, The Elephant Celebes, 1921.
4. 4. Photomontage
A composite image created by cutting and joining bits taken from other photographs.
Employed by Surrealists to convey the effects they desired: bizarre, disturbing, dreamworld.
Technique continues today with benefit of computer tools & recognition of photography as art.
René Magritte The Rape Shadow, 1934.
5. 5. The following contemporary images have a surreal quality: they are believably coherent images that are also incongruous.
These images are tantalising.
Is there a message or a comment or observation being made?
Try to work it out. There are no set answers here – just a desire to engage your attention and make you think.
Scott Mutter Untitled (church aisle)
http://www.photographymuseum.com/mutter/Gallery2.html
