The Federal Resource Program
• Principal Objective: Promoting a more sustainable use of
natural resources in agriculture
Positive effects on
agroecology in project
regions – Implementation
of innovations
Gather knowledge for
farmers and the Swiss
Agricultural Policy
• SDGs: Agriculture plays an important role as a driver of all
three dimensions of sustainable development. The Federal
Resource Program supports the sustainable development of
agriculture through agroecology (SDGs 2, 12, 15) .
3. 3Promoting Innovation and Agroecology: From Local to National Level

High diversity of projects
Biodiversity:
Promoting bees and wild bees,
Promoting biodiversity in cropping areas
New Technologies:
Improved irrigation,
Smart Farming
Antibiotic Resistance: Elimination of
Staphylococcus Aureus GTB, Advisory
services promoting new practices
Soil:
Humus formation and balance
Optimized use of plant
protection products

Scaling Up and Out
Farmers are a
key element for
scaling out
innovations

Decisions about implementation
of new measures in the National
Agricultural Policy are taken
based on a scientific evaluation of
the measure’s sustainability

Lessons Learnt
• A strong advantage of bottom-up projects is the broad
acceptance by farmers that strongly supports successful
innovation
• The scientific evaluation delivers information on the
effectiveness, practicability and economy and therefore the
sustainability of innovations
• The bottom-up approach and the scientific evaluation of
practices lead to an effective scaling out and up of
agroecology

Editor's Notes
Wie erreichen wir das?
RP:
Region oder Branche
Bottom-Up: Farmers are important
Implementation of Innovations for less effects on the environment, positive effects
SDG:
Related to…
Folie:
Für die Schweiz bedeutet Agroecology ein umfassender Ansatz: holistic approach: auch ökologie wichtig, aber auch Produktion -> darum viele unterschiedliche Projekte, aber auch Innovation
Massnahmen: Effizienzsteigerung -> less effects on environment, maintaining production, organisation, struktur
Biodiversitätsförderung, Boden: areas: food and nesting opportunities, optimization of means of production
Optimization of means of production: not to ban these products
Einsatz von neuen Technologien
Participation: from 30 to
2000 farmers
Übergang:
- How do we implement new practices?
Zuerst die drei Elemente, dann Details
Nicht in Details verlieren.
Finanzierung: Unterstützung für Landwirte, Limitiert auf 6 Jahre, positive Effekte beibehalten
Advisory services: on-field presentations, discussion of management practices and environmental effects
Scientific support: Monitoring positiv effects on the enviornment, evaluation of sustainability of measures
Übergang: In this way practices are implemented in projects. But how do we scale up agroecology?
Scaling up:
Unterschied? Scaling-up: bring measures on national level -> in national agricultural policy , scaling-out: convince farmers from agroecology with a transfer from farmer to farmer
-> gleiches Verhältnis der Rede zu den zwei Teilen.
Zusammenfassung:
Key Messages:
Bedeutung Agroecology -> holistic approach
Wiss. Begleitung (evidence based) -> evtl.
Farmers are important, bottom-up
