Editor's Notes

  • Several priority issues arose from the in-session workshops that the Koronivia Joint Work on Agriculture can advance:
The shift of pests and diseases under climate change, e.g. with early warning systems and big data
The lack of climate finance in agriculture, e.g. with blended models of public and private finance
The spread of climate information and early warming systems, e.g. by establishing response rules with the UN Global Framework for Climate Services

Greater collaboration between countries, farmers, researchers, businesses and development agencies should underpin all efforts of Koronivia.
  • Climate action in agriculture also has to support social and institutional structures:
Strengthen institutions, policy development, research, extension and climate finance
Prioritize actions and investments according to their costs and benefits
Women and youth are restricted by lack of access to capital and agricultural inputs and information
  • Index-based agricultural insurances trigger pay-outs based on an index correlated with agricultural loses
Digitization of agriculture can help farmers leapfrog, e.g. with digital platforms, site specific recommendations, access of information to women
Crop/livestock breeding for stress tolerance, and supporting value chains and post harvest infrastructure.
