It doesn’t seem possible, but slowly and quietly the long days of summer are giving way to the shorter cooler
days of autumn. I have always enjoyed the change that comes this time of year. The gardens have produced
their harvest so there’s no more picking beans and canning tomatoes. The lawn and flowers don’t need quit as
much attention and we can sit on the porch and listen to the chirping birds and chattering insects. It is a time
when nature shows itself in all of God’s glory as the trees change color and the sky is a brilliant cloudless blue.
Despite all the preparation to begin a new church year for me it has always been a time to be still and listen to
the quietness. It’s been a time to rest in the goodness of God.
Being still has not always been easy for me. There is always so much to do and so many things vie for my at-
tention that I don’t always take time to be still and relax in God’s presence. Fall is my reminder that in order
to be God’s servant I must make the time to listen before God, breathe in His goodness and draw upon His
strength.
I’m sure that many of you are the same way…we get so busy doing the things that need to be done that some-
times we forget the most essential detail of all and that is to find shelter in the living God. One of my go to
verses when I get anxious and need assurance is Zephaniah 3:17: “For the LORD your God has arrived to live
among you. He is a mighty savior. He will rejoice over you with great gladness. With his love, he will calm all
your fears. He will exult over you by singing a happy song.” (NLT)
This fall take time to get quiet before God and allow Him to rejoice over you. Let our Heavenly Father recharge
your batteries so you have the energy to go forward in His name. Listen for His happy song for He sings over
you with His love.
Peace and joy,
Pastor Carolyn
