CASE INTRODUCTION  Manchester United Soccer Club(MUSC) is a football club located in Manchester , New Hampshire.  Formed in 1992 to bring recreational players to a higher level of competition and preparing them for state Olympic development program and higher school teams.  The club currently has 24 boys and girls(age from 9-16) on teams affiliated with Hampshire Soccer Association and Granite State Girls Soccer League.  The club’s Board of Directors have decided to organize a summer invitational soccer tournament to generate revenue.  Hosting a soccer tournament is a popular method of raising funds.  MUSC teams regularly competes in 3-4 tournaments every year at different locations in New England.  These tournaments have been reported to generate between $50,000 to $70,000 for the host club.

Role Of Nicolette Larson  She has recently been elected as Tournament Director by Manchester United Tournament Organizing Committee for organizing the club’s first Summer tournament.  She had proposed a committee brainstorm and then recorded the ideas on a flipchart.  She goes home with a bundle of views and opinions and a headache about a major task to be undertaken.  She tells her husband about the first tournament committee meeting.  She is worried about event organization and talks to her husband who advises her to develop a WORK BREAKDOWN STRUCTURE for the tournament.  THE CASE IS ABOUT ORGANIZING A PROFITABLE EVENT FOR THE FIRST TIME .

My son’s team was robbed in a poorly officiated game last time We must contact the local colleges so that we may use their fields What about screening the teams and getting them registered We must see how to reward the teams-medals or trophies We can contact local corporate sponsors to fund the tournament. We need to consider the t-shirts and sweatshirt designs I know an artist whom we can recruit to develop a unique silk design

COST ESTIMATES Idea regarding probable areas where funds are required: (sponsor hunt ,fees for grounds ,printing , salaries to officials ,catering, accessories ,rewards , etc) Scale of the event determined after WBS can help estimate expenditure on: Opening ceremony Award distribution Closing ceremony Giving estimates about scale of event to sponsors and respective fund provisions The limitation/availability of the fund can help her schedule and plan expenditures of minute expenses as well(needs of grounds men, refreshment of players and officials etc Evaluation of revenues that are expected to come from the tournament
