The Community Engagement Project is a model for analyzing an existing
community. It can also be used in the planning stages when creating a new
community or social media program. The model is meant to be a prescriptive,
actionable evaluation framework for any online community.
The project is an aggregation of ideas and models developed by various thought
leaders in the field of community research. I have included references and links
that will expand the ideas beyond the brief overview given within each framework.
As you work through the five competencies and find areas for improvement in your
community and media efforts,

Editor's Notes
The Purpose of The Community Engagement Project What you are reading is the first publication of The Community Engagement Project. We will step through the five levels of community engagement, defining each within its own framework. By working your way through the project, you will have a historical snapshot of your existing community and social media engagements and know which areas are functioning well and which need work. It is a simple work that anyone can use when starting a new community or evaluating an existing one. Ultimately, the model can be used for evaluating a company, department or team’s existing social media and community efforts, with specific criteria for determining ROI from those strategies. The Community Engagement Project will continue to evolve as I receive feedback from companies, organizations and individuals using it. I hope you find it useful and I encourage you to send me feedback as your community grows through planned content management, increased engagement, more social visibility through SEO, and verifiable ROI against true business objectives.
