“characters have a narrative function, they provide astructure for the text”
Vladimir Propp was born in 1895 inRussia. He was a media theorist whoanalysed over 100 folk tales and realisedthat certain characters appear repeatedlyin all the tales. His theory is useful because it avoidstreating characters as if they areindividuals and reminds us that they‟remerely constructs. Some characters areinvolved just to progress the narrative.
These recurring characters are onessuch as the:-Hero (or heroine)-Villain-The gift giver-The sender-The false friend-The helper-The damsel in distress.

Friday 13 th (2009)In Friday 13th the clear Proppiancharacter type is the Villain who isthe murderer of the film. There arealso a set of victims who wouldmake up the Damsel In Distressroles. This is different towardsother genres as there isn‟t a clearhero or knight in shining armourseen in the film, instead the villainis seen as powerful andunstoppable. This helps create fearin the audience.
The characters which appearmost in film trailers no matterwhat genre are the „heroes‟ andthe „villains‟. This is due to thefact that it makes the filminvolve some form ofcompetition which makes thefilm more interesting for theviewer to watch. It also followstradition from books and fairy-tales. There is usually a damselin distress of some sort, but itisn‟t a necessary component.
