Thank you for having me. Introduce self - workplace psychologist and consultant. Working with a number of organisation through changes. Significant to you. My focus is less on in how the organisation as a bigger system goes through change (although ultimately important for my client, and that’s the desired outcome, successful change). I’m interested in the individuals within that system and how they experience change. Increasing evidence in workplace psychology and organisation development that when we can help individuals to flourish at work, then the bigger system benefits too. So to that end, today’s focus is on Positive Change and Self Care.
I’ve talked a little about positive change but what about the self care. You are carers - you’re working in a caring industry or profession - but do you care for yourself? Do you know how to best care for yourself, psychologically and emotionally? Going to give you some tips and strategies for that.
Question for you. How do we respond to change. When you’re told at work that there is a new round of changes coming, structural or funding changes, or process changes or staffing changes or whatever it may be, how do you feel?
What about changes outside work? Who has gone through personal changes?
Even positive change can be hard or overwhelming and cumulative change is exhausting.
Walk through model. Rental example. Notice that the landlord is going to sell the house you’re living in. Happens with work-related change too. There’s another reason why we find change emotional and difficult and it has to do with the way our brains work.
We notice negative things more than positive and we give more weight to negative things than positive. Question: Why do you think that is?
Example - crossing the road. What happens if we spend all of our time focusing on the negatives and the threats and the worries? Negative impact on your mental health and on those around you. Drags you down. Next slide
I’m going to get you to spend some time developing the skills to overcome your negativity bias and to grow and flourish in the face of change.
Why? What are the benefits of overcoming your negativity bias?
