- Hello, I’m Ellen Book, the Manager of the Pinecrest Branch Library one of 49 libraries making up MDPLS.
- Before we get to the meat and potatoes of the program I love to show off library offerings.
- It’s easy to sign up for a library card and get immediate access to our online library. A vast collection is available with your library card like eBooks, eAudiobooks, movies, music and more! Go to M-D-P-L-S ‘dot’ org to learn more.

- This app is your library on the go with 24/7 access for downloading and streaming eBooks, eAudiobooks, movies, music and magazines, search the catalog, find your nearest library branch and hours, request and renew books, search events and much more!
- Have titles mailed directly to your home through Libraries @ Your Door our free one direction Home Delivery Service. Just log in into your library account online or calling us to make requests. Once you're ready to return your items, simply drop them off at any library location, use the book drops or pay return postage to mail them back.

- Oct. 8, 2022 https://mdpls.org/event/6853925 A new monthly Read with Me Book Club for kids ages 6+. All titles are Newbery Award winners. 11am - Noon. The first one, no one showed up. Now there are 10!
- A partnership with Kristi House with 2 sessions every 2nd Wed. Book readings, interactive scenarios, and fun role-playing activities, enabling children to easily identify and assert personal boundaries without feelings of shame or guilt for children ages 4-10 years of age.

- First Weds. The Miami Poets celebrate all things poetic. Bring poems to read, yours or those by favorite poets. Share publishing ideas, contests to enter, and new formats to explore. - Invited a local celebrity chef for the kickoff. I picked third Mondays dinnertime from 6pm – 7:30pm. The club will cover types of cuisine with meeting #1 to be Floridian. Interested cooks can create a recipe from a library cookbook or one from your own collection. The potluck meeting will be filled with camaraderie amongst foodies. - Online request form for new titles not owned by MDPLS. Remember to request titles way in advance to ensure that it can be purchased and shipped. A hold is placed for you when purchased. E-titles take less time.
- Wait-time: another library outside of MDPLS must agree to send, mail, and the MDPLS’ internal delivery.
- Who picks the titles? (gets blamed for the titles) Who researches the author? Who chooses the questions? Who moderates? Will there be formal questions and answers (usually easy to find by Googling the title and book club questions or informal? Each person speaks or random conversations?
- Around the world – different authors, different countries. Tie in to travel, to cooking, banned books… Can you handle controversy or simplicity? Best sellers? Library copies or purchasing? NYT Paperback list
- Books that everyone loves or everyone hates are problems. One sided discussions are boring. Have both types of cogent comments for either side of the debate.
- Where to find titles? Books We Love is NPR’s interactive reading guide that is a bounty of hand-picked books. Mix and match tags such as Book Club Ideas, Biography & Memoir or Eye-Opening Reads to filter results and find the book that’s perfect for you or someone you love. Staffers and trusted critics nominate their favorite books from the first half of 2022.
- Where to find titles? Publishers website Random House Book Club draws readers and books together by recommending compelling stories and creating discussion guides. They host Zoom Happy Hour events to discuss our monthly Spotlight Picks—buzzy new fiction you’ll want to be the first to read and chat about. These events often include a special appearance from the author!
- Q to think about before starting: Open to all? Where to publicize: NextDoor, FB, MeetUp, Eventbrite Who sends notifications, reminders, and notes? Food? Alcohol? If it’s on Zoom will you be recording it?

- Keep a historical record. For each book one club recorded first names and then a sentence or two about the person: Ex. Secretary who felt that…
- My tip: Have a video, 8-10 minutes, with the author explaining their book. youTube, Publishing House, Author’s website or Amazon page.
- I hope that you are inspired by my experiences and take the plunge. Happiness is finding and expanding your community. Not everyone fits into every bookclub. But always be welcoming to newcomers, focus on the book, versus food and drink, and you’ll keep the momentum.
