Writing an effective summary

  1. 1. Writing an Effective Summary
  2. 2. What is a summary? A summary is a condensed (much shorter) version of the text. Therefore, the summary should be relatively short and to the point. A summary is NOT a paraphrase of the text.
  3. 3. An effective summary isaccurate. Therefore, you must read the text closely and gain a true understanding of the text before writing your summary. Your summary should accurately represent the meaning of the text.
  4. 4. An effective summary includesimportant information. The summary must include the main ideas of the text. You do not need to include specific details from the text, but include enough information so that the reader understands the author’s ideas/information presented. Again, you must have a clear understanding of the text before writing your summary.
  5. 5. An effective summary isobjective. The summary should only include facts and information found in the text. Do NOT include your own opinions or personal judgments about the information in the text.
  6. 6. An effective summary is NOTa copy of the text. This means you need to write the summary using your own words. Do NOT copy the text word-for-word. Figure out how to reword what is stated in the text without changing the meaning of the text.
  7. 7. If you:clearly understand your text and know the elements of an effective summary, then you: will be successful!
