How to Choose Your Spike
Stage 1: “I have so many pursuits that I’m good at! How do I
choose?”
Prioritize. Rank them in terms of how meaningful they are to you.
- If you had to give up all your pursuits but one, which would it be?
- Which do you spend the most time and energy on?
- Which brings you the most personal development and fulfillment?
- If prestige or recognition did not matter, which one would you continue
to pursue for life?
Focus. Spend more time on the pursuits that are most meaningful to
you, that have the potential for further exploration in college and your
career.
10. How to Choose Your Spike
Stage 2: “I know what I love/ what I want to work on, but I’m not
doing it yet”
Be intentional.
Passion projects cannot run on passion alone. Clarify your intentions
for pursuing what you love and want to work on and use these
intentions as your motivation to start and sustain your spike
development.
Be productive with your time. Don’t spend it doing what you clearly
don’t enjoy, or what you don’t wish to work on. You already have a
clear vision, so use your time wisely and efficiently to bring it to life.
11. How to Choose Your Spike
Stage 3: “I have no idea what I want to do…”
Set aside time for self-reflection.
Take a moment and go through the process of thinking about what
matters to you most in the following steps:
1. Make a list of the things that you’re good at, and the things you enjoy doing
or learning about. This is the full list of potential spikes you could develop.
2. Next to each of these things, write down the amount of time you spend on
them on a weekly basis. This reveals specific spikes that you have been
developing more than others.
3. For each of the things on your list, clarify to yourself why they matter to you,
and which ones matter more than others. This should give you an idea of things
worth pursuing short term or long term.
