  • Belgium evolved from a central governed country to a federal governed country
Belgian federal government matters of national interest (foreign policy, justice, defence, …), 3 regions legislative powers
Flemish government competent for regional matters (territory e.g. infrastructure) and community matters (matters that involve the lives of the Femish people (education, health care, …)
    5 provinces / 308 municipalities
Road safety = federal, regional, provincial and local
    2010: Grote Verkeersquiz
    2012:
    68.000 deelnemers acties
    60.250 deelnemers vormingen
    19.500 aantal vormingsuren
  • 500 million inhabitants
28 member states Croatia became a member 1° July 2013
  • Would we accept more than 150 airplane crashes in Europe, each year?... Yet we accept it in road traffic!
  • Population 10 million
    Severly injured
  • Yellow: fatalities on the road
  • Positive evolution. Improvement road safety >50%; in spite of an increase of mobility >30%
  • Car dependency
  • Car dependency
  • Car dependency
  • Even if we think about the mobility of the future we start from the car.
  • Problems: road unsafety, quality of life, accessibility and reachability, health (air pollution, don’t exercise, stress)
Verkeersveiligheid, bereikbaarheid, toegankelijkheid, leefbaarheid, natuur en milieu.
  • Different transport modes have a different impact on road safety, environment, congestion, …
  • Life long learning 0-100 years old
Education about (different means of transport AND road safety and sustainable mobility)
Principles (teach the teacher AND practice-based)
  • Focus
  • Teach the teacher: we are not able to visit all schools in Flanders.
Practical: just like swimming is learned in the water (and not in a class room), behaving safe in traffic is learned in traffic. First in a protected environment and later in real traffic
Step by step. Big differences between children and teenagers
    Traffic education is fun

  • Stuurvaardigheid + Verkeersvaardigheid = Fietsvaardigheid
  • Results: more than 70.000 certificates distributed (since 2004)
  • Role of traffic parents: to assist and support schools
    17/10/2013: 1436 traffic parents
