  4. 4. J9672Esri White PaperMethodology Statement: EsriUS—Market Potential DatabaseMarket PotentialIndexEsris 2012 Market Potential data measures the likely demand for aproduct or service in an area. The database includes an expected numberof consumers and a Market Potential Index (MPI) for each product orservice. An MPI compares the demand for a specific product or service inan area with the national demand for that product or service. The MPIvalues at the US level are 100, representing overall demand. A value ofmore than 100 represents higher demand, and a value of less than 100represents lower demand. For example, an index of 120 implies thatdemand in the area is likely to be 20 percent higher than the US average;an index of 85 implies a demand that is 15 percent lower. How Esri CalculatesMarket PotentialEsri computes Market Potential by combining 2012 Tapestry™ Segmentation data withDoublebase®2009 data from GfK MRI. Doublebase 2009 is an integration of informationfrom four consumer surveys. Each survey respondent can be identified by Tapestrysegment, so a rate of consumption by Tapestry segment can be determined for a productor service for any area. The Expected Number of Consumers (households or adults) for a product or service in anarea is computed by applying the consumption rate for Tapestry market segment "n" tohouseholds or adults in the area belonging to Tapestry segment "n," and summing across65 Tapestry segments.Expected Number of Consumers = å=´651nnn )RatenConsumptio(CountThe Local Consumption Rate for a product or service for an area is computed as the ratioof the expected number of consumers for a product or service in the area to the totalhouseholds or adults in the area.Local Consumption Rate =CountBaseConsumersofNumberExpectedThe Market Potential Index for a product or service for an area is the ratio of the localconsumption rate for a product or service for the area to the US consumption rate for theproduct or service, multiplied by 100.Market Potential Index =Local Consumption RateUS Consumption Ratex100

Methodology Statement: Esri US—Market Potential DatabaseJ9672March 2013 2Esris Market Potential database includes data for more than 2,200 items, organized into35 categories, representing goods, services, attitudes, and activities collected from GfKMRI surveys. Unless otherwise noted, each item refers to consumer spending or behaviorin a 12-month period. The a or h following the five-digit product code denotes aconsumer base of adults or households, respectively.Products and services, such as apparel items, types of digital cameras, video gamesystems, financial accounts and services, health-related items, Internet activities, satelliteTV providers, personal care services, and detailed information about cell phones/PDAs(brands, service providers, average monthly bills, and purchase locations), are included.A product description was revised since the last Market Potential update if a productchange was made by GfK MRI, if ranges had to be collapsed, or if more clarification wasrequired. A product was dropped since the last Market Potential update if it did not pass asample size test, became outdated or unnecessary, or no longer exists in the GfK MRIdatabase.Esris DataDevelopment TeamLed by chief demographer Lynn Wombold, Esris data development team has a 35-yearhistory of excellence in market intelligence.
