Philippe Villers - Grainpro

  1. 1. Improving food security by1 reducing post harvest losses Presented at AgriBusiness Forum 2011 Johannesburg - October 17, 2011 Presented by Philippe Villers, President, GrainPro, Inc. “A Green, Not Only For Profit Company”PPT4025PV0911-1 © 2011 GrainPro, Inc.
  2. 2. What I want to talk about: At the heart of improving post harvest drying and storage for a hungry and poverty-troubled world, is the widespread application of simple, affordable, modern technology – we like to call it: “The Green Revolution, Phase II, the Storage Revolution”PPT4025PV0911-1 © 2011 GrainPro, Inc. 2
  3. 3. The Green Revolution, Phase II The Storage Revolution v Section 1: Current Food Security Issues v Section 2: Causes of Post Harvest Losses v Section 3: What is being Done Now? v Section 4: What next? v Section 5: Bringing the Market to the FarmerPPT4025PV0911-1 © 2011 GrainPro, Inc . 3
  4. 4. World Bank Statement: “The World Bank Group, including the International Finance Corporation (IFC), its private sector investment arm, recognizes that postharvest loss reduction should become one of the medium-term pillars of investment in agriculture…The World Bank and IFC also integrate postharvest loss in many of our agricultural projects.” -Robert B. Zoellick, President, The World Bank August, 2011PPT4025PV0911-1 © 2011 GrainPro, Inc. 4

  8. 8. Permissible Aflatoxin Levels Regulations on Permissible LevelsTo protect consumers, often restricted to <10PPBIn 2010, 10% of the Kenya maize crop had to be destroyed because of excessive aflatoxin levels.PPT4025PV0911-1 © 2011 GrainPro, Inc. 8
  9. 9. Research on Aflatoxins (AF) ~Dr. J.H. Williams, University of Georgia An estimated 4.5 billion people in developing countries are at risk of uncontrolled, or poorly controlled exposure to AF. Up to 40% commodities in local African markets exceed allowable levels of AF for foods. A cross sectional study in Ghana shows that immune systems of HIV infected people are significantly modified if they have above median levels of natural exposure to AF. People with a high AF biomarker status in The Gambia and Ghana were more likely to have active Malaria.PPT4025PV0911-1 © 2011 GrainPro, Inc. 9
  10. 10. What is Airtight Hermetic Storage?A Modern “Green” solution to Safe Storage Up to One Year Low O2 / high CO2 environment kills living insects & suppresses new development without pesticides  Gas-tight storage Facility (1-2% Oxygen) (to all to common 25% losses!)  Prevents growth of mold producing aflatoxins (decreasing vulnerability to cancer & HIV)  Prevents increase in Free Fatty Acids (FFAs)  Moisture level remains constant PPT4025PV0911-1 © 2011 GrainPro, Inc. 10
