Definition “Social media technologies take on different forms including magazines, Internet forums, weblogs, social blogs,microblogging, wikis, social networks, podcasts, photographs or pictures, video, rating and social bookmarking” Social media are primarily Internet-based tools for sharing and discussing information among human beings. Definition It’s a concept deeply linked to “social media” : a Web 2.0 site may allow users to interact and collaborate with each other in a social media dialogue as creators of user-generated content in a virtual community, in contrast to websites where people are limited to the passive viewing of content. Web 2.0 is a term describing changing trends in the use of World Wide Web technology and web design that aims to enhance creativity, secure information sharing, collaboration and functionality of the web. One of the most famous 2.0 sites is Youtube: the video platform that allows everyone to upload and broadcast their own video. Users can upload, view and share videos.   15. 15. Multimedia sharing Media sharing allows users to upload and share videos and pictures to sharing websites such as Youtube, Vimeo and Flickr. Other users can watch the videos and pictures, comment on them, share them with other users and even embed them on their own websites and blogs: FLICKR is the biggest picture sharing platform where you can find beautiful pictures from all over the world: Vimeo is where you can find great quality videos, made by independent artist and young film producers: YouTube is the most famous video platform, over 800 million unique users visit this site each month, in the same period over 4 billion hours of video are watched, while 72 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute. 15
  16. 16. Social bookmarking Social bookmarking allows web users to save, organize and share their bookmarks of web pages on the Internet (vs. their own computers). Social news sites allow users to submit web pages and articles and have other users vote them with the # of votes determining which articles are presented on the social news site. They are very useful because: 1) They allow you to save all your favorite links, categorized according to your needs 2) You can discover new trends and understand what is hot on the internet 16

You’ve probably heard of Twitter, which is a Microblogging tool. Microbloggers can submit their updates via the web itself or via text messages, instant message, or even email. Microblogging is very easy and fast: for this reason it is becoming the self press office of many politicians and celebrities.
