  • At one time, big data was the domain of HPC and web – found in media and ent., energy, life sci. and web 2.0 apps.Last year really began the convergence of big data and enterprise IT. Big data is no longer limited to HPC or lines of business in the enterprise.Today organizations are experiencing big data in the enterprise in the form of petabyte scale home directories and file shares, from data that can’t be deleted with increased value of both old and new data. And meeting governance and compliance requirements has significant meaning in industries such as health care and financial services but it also means that enterprises across markets are experiencing big data growth in large amounts of archive data.All of this is contributing to the growth of big data in the enterprise and what we’re calling the enterprise @scale.
  • This slide shows the rapid growth of data stored by organizations as projected by IDC.This phenomenon is affecting organizations in virtually all industry segments and a wide range of enterprise use cases including: File Shares, Home Directories, Data Repositories and Archives.In addition to the rapid growth of data, this research also shows a remarkable shift in the composition of data being generated and stored—the shift from traditional “block-based” data to unstructured, file-based data.Note to Presenter: Click now in Slide Show mode for animation.IDC projects that by 2013, 80 percent of all incremental storage capacity required by organizations will be for file-based data. Our discussion today is focused on addressing the challenges associated with managing this type of data.
  • The File Data Challenge is a major concern for many CIOs.   • Today, we see that additional market forces and emerging technologies are causing enterprise File Data storage needs to further evolve. In addition to keeping pace with the rapid growth of file data in file shares, home directories and various data repositories across their organizations, Enterprises today need to support growing requirements for An increasingly mobile workforce who need the ability to access and share file data “any time, any where and from any device”Data analytics to gain new insight that can accelerate your business andCloud-based capabilities for greater efficiency and flexibility. All of these technologies are placing new demands upon your enterprise storage infrastructure. Our focus today will be to address needs for file data storage while also supporting mobile users through on-line file sharing (also referred to as ‘sync and share’).To address thechallenges posed by these use cases, most organizations are looking for a storage infrastructure that is:Easy to manageMassively scalableHighly efficientExtremely secure
  • To address the challenges posed by these next-generation applications and use cases, the successful “Enterprise @ Scale” needs a storage infrastructure that is:Easy to manageMassively scalableHighly efficientExtremely secureCustomers are deploying a new class of applications designed to take advantage of web-scale, storage as a service offerings.These new applications include                Web Applications                Mobile Applications                Large Content Repositories               These applications are moving away from connection based NAS protocols which have to hold a connection open to session based access, much like a web browser.Hence they tend to favor Object protocols which are very similar to the traditional URLs that are used for browsing the web.The most popular object protocol is  Amazon S3. Amazon S3 is however a proprietary protocol.Isilon is releasing its own object protocol as part of OneFS 7.0.2, which is based on S3 and therefore very similar.We will be releasing an application developer guide to assist developers in writing applications that can communicate over our object protocol.Applications developed for S3 will require some modification to work with our object protocol. At some point in the future we will provide guidelines for porting applications that can speak S3 to our protocol. This is unique in that it allows our customers to adopt object storage at their own pace. Some will want to take existing applications and port them to use object interfaces over time. Some will have massive complex applications that they port to object one component at a time, and yet they would like to make the same data accessible to legacy NAS applications and the new object applications simultaneously.

  • Isilon is different than other scale-out like products on the market. Build from the beginning for scale-out, it doesn’t use any legacy scale-up RAID storage on the backend with a layered file system on top that presents a global namespace to the underlying hardware.With Isilon, a single file system and volume span all nodes. Unlike systems comprised of clustered scale-up, Isilon data protection and data management features are incorporated directly in the file system itself, not in the underlying hardware.

  • One key aspect of consolidating multiple file workflows is managing the value of the data over time. Without automation and policies, this is an insurmountable task for storage admins. Which data should be moved from primary high performance storage, which user files need to be retained but can be moved to an online archive tier to improve utilization of the system?With SmartPools, policies can automate this process by moving less frequently accessed data, data from older projects and specific types of files to an online archive tier within the same file system with total transparency to users and applications and without complex stubbing. Files moved to the archive tier can made immutable with the SmartLock feature and also be protected at higher levels of availability to insure compliance and governance standards are met for archive data.
  • Isilon storage systems are highly resilient and provide unmatched data protection and availability. Isilon uses the proven Reed-Solomon erasure encoding algorithm rather than RAID to provide a level of data protection that goes far beyond traditional storage systems.Here is an example of the flexibility and types of data protection that are standard in an Isilon cluster:With N+1 protection, data is 100 percent available even if a single drive or node fails. This is similar to RAID 5 in conventional storage.Note to Presenter: Click now in Slide Show mode for animation.N+2 protection allows two components to fail within the system, similar to RAID 6.With N+3 or N+4 protection, three or four components can fail, keeping the data 100 percent available.Isilon FlexProtectis the foundation for data resiliency and availability in Isilon storage solutions.Legacy “scale-up” systems are still dependent on traditional data protection. They typically use traditional RAID, which consumes 30 to 50 percent of the available disk capacity. The time to rebuild a RAID group after a drive failure continues to increase with drive capacity, and data loss is susceptible to a two-disk failure.Isilon’s industry-leading data protection will provide 100 percent accessibility to data with one-, two-, three-, or four-node failures in a pool. And, data protection levels can be established on a file, directory, or file system level so all data can be treated independently—meeting SLAs based on the application or type of data.And due to the distributed yet symmetric nature of the cluster, all nodes participate in accelerating the restoration of the portions of files from a failed drive. As the cluster grows, the rebuild times become faster and more efficient, making the adoption of larger-capacity drives very simple.   • Key Points: Today Isilon is the industry’s best solution for home directories. But, users still have substantial amounts of content on their local drives outside of the control of IT. Worse yet, in order to gain access to those files on all their devices and easily share them inside and outside the organization, they are putting those files in consumer-grade file sharing services or emailing them as attachments.
