Few facts about BMTC ITS Large scale deployment of ITS in the country in terms of infrastructure with 10,000+ online ETMs and 6500+ VTUs Largest impact to citizens as BMTC has a ridership of approximately 5.2 million per day (Bangalore has a population of around 10 million) VTS ETS PISSmart Card Command & Data Centre BMTC ITS Integrated ITS implementation by an STU for urban public transportation system in India. Intelligent Transport System (ITS) Objective: To induce modal shift in the travel patterns of the citizens from private transport to public transport which is the need of the hour which will not just help users with comfortable and reliable transport service but also increase ridership thereby increasing revenues for BMTC. It is a win-win solution for all. Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) ITS comprises of three main components: 1. Electronic Ticketing System 2. Vehicle Tracking System 3. Passenger Information System Business Model: BMTC ITS implementation is based on the BOOT (build own operate and transfer) model. BMTC will pay on a per device per month basis to the Systems Integrator.

Electronic Ticketing System Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) Features  Comprises of 10,000+ GPRS enabled Electronic Ticketing Machines (ETM)  Online revenue monitoring  Automated and secure ticketing  Reduce tamper and pilferage  Spot issue of tickets and manage inventory of pre-printed tickets  EOD cash audit/reconciliation of ETM and ticket bags  Supports Line Checking by S&V staff  On & Offline Depot Management System to address connectivity issues  Over-the-Air (OTA) upgradation of ETM terminal application How it works?  Each ETM will be fed with pre-defined schedule information which would be operated by the conductor.  ETM sends data to ITS server at a frequency of every 5 minutes. This helps in monitoring the details of tickets issued and revenue collected at each trip in ITS application.

Vehicle Tracking System Features  Comprises of 6500+ GPS based vehicle tracking units (VTU)  Live tracking of buses on GIS maps  Location, time & speed monitoring  Generate alerts for non-adherence to schedule performance  Incident management through two way communication system  Over-the-Air (OTA) upgradation of VTU firmware  Generation of various graphical, tabular and spatial reports on critical parameters. How it works?  VTU sends data to the ITS server at a frequency of 10 seconds through which the exact position and speed of the vehicle can be tracked on the GIS map.  All the bus stops and depots are geo-coded and geo-fenced. This virtual fencing will signal vehicle movement within the fence and sense when it moves out. Buses not stopping at designated bus stops can be tracked. This will also help BMTC to record bus timings as per routes and provide live information to commuters Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS)

Passenger Information Systems (PIS) Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) Features  Comprises of 35 LCD display board at major bus stations and TTMC  Real-time information on Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) to commuters through mobile app, website and helpdesk  Dedicated Trip Planner available on mobile and website  Notifications regarding service and incident related information for commuters How it works?  The location and time details of a bus is fetched from the VTU while the information on the route (active trips ) is fetched from the ETM.  The application uses the data received from VTU and ETM to predict the estimated time of arrival through Google algorithm.

Challenges Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS)  Change management with a work force of around 36,000 from existing as-is scenario to post ITS scenario.  High dependence of day to day operations on network and IT infrastructure  Ensuring mapping of correct vehicles to allotted schedules is critical as the accuracy of the reports generated by the Vehicle Tracking System and the ETA predicted by the Passenger Information System entirely depends on accurate mapping.
