“A state in which the integrity of Earth system
and ecosystem processes remain unimpaired
to a degree that lineages can persist to the
future as parts of ecosystems, and organisms
(including humans) can realize their typical
characteristics and capacities.”

 The Campus Development Programme of JYU states that one
strategic goal of the University is to decisively to aim planetary
well-being
→ University will achieve carbon neutrality and no net loss
of biodiversity by 2030.
 Guides JYU in implementing the UN SDGs :
– 12 Responsible Consumption and Production
– 13 Climate Action
– 14 Life Below Water
– 15 Life on Land
 The combined effect on the well-being of humans and non-
human nature of the goals of the roadmap is as substantial as
possible
 JYU has received WWF’s Green Office Certificate 2013

nature positive higher education
institution that works actively to
promote planetary well-being on
local, national and international
levels.”

  • 5.  The Campus Development Programme of JYU states that one strategic goal of the University is to decisively to aim planetary well-being → University will achieve carbon neutrality and no net loss of biodiversity by 2030.  Guides JYU in implementing the UN SDGs : – 12 Responsible Consumption and Production – 13 Climate Action – 14 Life Below Water – 15 Life on Land  The combined effect on the well-being of humans and non- human nature of the goals of the roadmap is as substantial as possible  JYU has received WWF’s Green Office Certificate 2013
  • 6. “From 2030, the University of Jyväskylä is a carbon negative and nature positive higher education institution that works actively to promote planetary well-being on local, national and international levels.”
  • 7.  The Univesity’s climate impact was first calculated in 2019  Baseline for measuring carbon footprint and biodiversity impact of energy consuptions.  Carbon footprint in 2019 was 31 857 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e) – About 1,9 tCO2e per person (16849 staff members, students, grant researchers and pupils of the Teacher Training School)  Combined biodiversity impact from using wood fuels (for heating) in 2019 was 20,76 forest habitat hectares, and peat extraction (peat used for heating as well) was 0,52 habitat hectares. →biodiversity loss resulting form procurement made by JYU in 2019 was 9,07 x 10 -5 PDF (potentilally dissapeared fraction of species)
  • 8. 1. Changing consumption habits (procurement, energy as electricity and heat, other consumpiton and recycling, water, food) – Changes in consumption are monitored using the WWF Green Office Consumer Habit Questionnaire and JYU’s own biodiversity and climate impact calculations 2. Sustainability of ownership and investments – For example, ESG (environmental, social, governance) metrics are paid attention to and developed as part of investment activities in the management of funds 3. Change in travelling behaviour – Muscular power instead of private cars 4. Sustainable construction 5. Compensating the remaining environmental impacts 6. Campus development 7. Connecting planetary well-being to policy planning at JYU 8. JYU as a pioneer
  • 9. Renewing curricula (new curricula starts in autumn 2024) Planetary well-being MOOCs available for everyone The Introduction to Planetary well-being (1 ECTS) course is required for all students pursuing a bachelor’s degree
  • 10. 1. Introduction to planetary well-being (1 ECTs) 2. Systems and planetary well-being (1 ECTs) 3. Good life and planetary well-being (1 ECTs) 4. Pathways to planetary well-being (1 ECTs) Offered by JYU Open University. Open to everybody without pre-requisite studies. FREE of charge. Offered in Finnish and in English. Completing the studies and for getting the credits a student needs to register, identification by passport or valid EU ID card (or Finnish online banking IDs).   • 12.  Two online courses offered by JYU Open University  Nature under Threat 1 : Species and Ecosystems (1 ECT)  Nature under Threat 2: Red-list Assessment in Finland and Globally (1 ECT)  FREE of charge, offered in Finnish and in English  To get credits a student needs to register (identification by passport, valid EU ID card or Finnish online banking IDs)  Give insight into how and why species and ecosystems are increasingly becoming threatened  More info and links to registration: https://www.avoin.jyu.fi/en/courses-offered/nature-under- threat
  • 13.  As a stategic goal – What has achieved so far: – Total carbon footprint in 2021 was 26 786 tCO2e, which was 19% less than in 2019. – Few thousand students have enrolled the courses of planetary well-being – Couple thousands have completed – The Introduction of Planetary well-being –course is now added to all bachelor programmes at JYU and the implementation start next autumn  JYU continues to reach the targets and goals that we have in our environmental programme
