  1. 1. • Addiction has long been understood to mean anuncontrollable habit of using alcohol or other drugs• People can also develop addictions to behaviors, suchas gambling, and even quite ordinary and necessaryactivities such as exercise and eating• Two aspects are common in all addictions:1.Addictive behavior is maladaptive or counter-productive to the individual2.The behavior is persistent. When someone is addicted,they will continue to engage in the addictive behavior,despite it causing them trouble

  4. 4. • American Medical Association defined heavy gaming asplaying for more than two hours per day• Estimates are that gamers spend playing video gamesfrom 6 to 12 hours per week• When game playing is addictive, it takes over as theperson’s main way of coping with life, with otherimportant areas of life being neglected or disrupted asa result.• Addiction is seen mostly in Massive Multiplayer OnlineRole Playing Game -- MMORPG for short, which makeup 9.1% of gamers, and may overlap with other typesof internet addiction or computer addiction.
  5. 5. • Amount of time spent playing,• The strong emotional attachment to the activity,• The patterns of social difficulties experienced bygaming addicts.• It disrupts family and other areas of life, such as school• The younger that children begin playing video games,the more likely they are to develop dependence-likebehaviors.• Some gamers feel unable to reduce the time they spendplaying, others do not experience cravings if they areunable to play.
  6. 6. • Addiction• Increased risk of light-induced seizures• Musculoskeletal disorders of the upper extremities• Increased metabolic rate• Increased aggressive thoughts• Aggressive behaviors, particularly in children underage 10.• Desensitization and empathy to violence. It leads to anunderestimation of the seriousness of observedviolence and reduces the likelihood of helping a victim• Reduced pro-social (cooperative) behaviors in socialinteractions

Why Video Games Are Addictive?• Physical- Video gaming is in the same category asgambling, which elevates dopamine during the actof play• Psychological-1-The knowledge that ‘I can escapeor feel good about my life.’ Dissociating fromreality, 2-Replacing it with a fantasy world wherethey can be whoever they want to be and performtasks that they have always craved in real world butare unable to do so.• Parenting Style-parent’s negative interactionsdrives the child into the world of video games.
  8. 8. • Use the ratings system to choose video games for yourchild• Limit your child to 1 to 2 hours of total daily screentime• Monitor and restrict your childs use of video games,TV and the Internet• Teach your child internet safety• Stay updated with research into the effects of videogames• Engage your child in a range of healthy activities• Teach your child a variety of ways of coping withemotions and disappointments
  9. 9. • The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends thatparents limit screen time to no more than two hoursper day includes television, videos/DVDs, and videogames• •Allow your child to play for 20 minutes per day• You can set two days a week as "video game" days• •Bring handheld video games to social events only onspecial occasions• •When your childrens friends gather at your house,limit the amount of time they play video games.• Talk to your child about why you want to reduce his orher screen time

  14. 14. • Islam allows everything unless proven it doesnt• The proof can only come from the Quran or theauthentic Hadith.• Video games are like most things: they can be used forgood or for bad objectives• If the game teaches you Islam, Arabic, reading,problem solving, etc., then its good.• If you play for money then its forbidden gambling. If itdistracts you so much that you miss prayers then itcaused a sin. If it displays haram stuff then its haram.• Wasting of time is also not permitted so dont sithours together by playing video games

(Anam,6:32)Well, let them remain absorbed in their falsehoodsand sports, till they see that Day of theirs withwhich they are being threatened. (Zukhruf,43: 83)

QuranThe inmates of Hell will cry out to the people ofParadise: “Pour upon us a little water or throw downa bit of the provisions Allah has bestowed upon you.”The people of Paradise will reply, “Allah has forbiddenboth these things to the disbelievers, who had madetheir religion a sport and a pastime, and who hadbeen deluded by the worldly life.” (Aaraaf,7: 50-51)

Yahiya said, "I heard the Prophet (SAW)disapprove of playing it and other worthless games.He recited this ayah, What is there after the truthexcept going the wrong way. " (Surah l0 verse 32).(Al-Muwatta Hadith 52.7)• Prophet (SAW) said, "Whoever plays games of dicehas disobeyed Allah and His Messenger.“Al-Muwatta Hadith 52.6
  19. 19. • Illusionary battles which train a person in what to do insimilar circumstances [in real life];• Being alert so as to save oneself from danger;• Fighting enemies and destroying targets; planning;having adventures;• Finding the way out of a labyrinth;• Escaping from wild beasts;• Racing cars, planes, etc.;• Overcoming obstacles;• Searching for treasure.• Educational: Taking things apart and putting them backtogether, jigsaw puzzles, building things, coloring, andshading and lighting.

Types of Games• Virtual worlds (e.g. Second Life) are computer-based simulated environments, through whichusers interact through digital avatars and engage invarious types of social activities• Simulation games (e.g. The Sims) replicate real lifeactivities. Players assume more of a “manager” or a“creator” role during game play• First-person shooters (FPS) (e.g. Counter Strike) areweapon-based combat games from the first-personperspective.

Groups andtribes are common in MMORPGs. Cooperation with(and competition against) others are integral to thegame. These are the most addictive game genreCasual games are short and simple games, usuallyplayed on mobile phones or directly over internet.Examples are Angry Birds, Bejeweled and Plants vsZombies. These are popular among smartphone usersas a convenient time-filler, at bus stops and trainstations for instance

Games which approve of witchcraft/magic, andwhich glorify witches/magicians/sorcerers, etc.

Games that include depictions of nudity, andpornographic pictures• 8-Games that corrupt morals, such as games wherethe idea is to run away with a girlfriend from thebad guys or a dragon• 9-Games based on ideas of gambling
  24. 24. Haram(forbidden) elements in video games• 10-Physical harm, such as damage to the eyes andnervous system; harmful effects of game sounds onthe ears. Addictive effect.• 11- Making children get used to violence andcriminality, and teaching them to take killing andmurder lightly, as in the famous “Doom” game• 12-Corrupting children’s sense of reality byteaching them about a world of illusions andimpossible things, such as coming back from thedead, supernatural powers that do not really exist,images of space aliens, and so on.

  28. 28. • Video games addiction is a reality• Parents need to take preventive steps to save theirchildren from it• Islam does not prohibit entertainment as long asthere are no forbidden elements in there.• However, we need to limit our time in electronicmedia• We need to realize that time at our disposal is veryprecious and must be utilized judiciously• Activities to please Allah (SWT) and achieve successin the Akhirah must take precedenceCONCLUSION
