Dr Vivek Baliga - Organ Donation And The FORT Program

  1. 1. Dr Vivek Baliga Consultant Internal Medicine, Baliga Diagnostics Director, HeartSense
  2. 2.  We have all heard of blood donation. Some of us have heard of organ donation. Donating your organs to save another life is a sacrifice beyond any.  When it comes to donating blood, very few of us hesitate. The likely reason for this is because many of us know that we will walk out of the donation centre – alive.
  3. 3.  However, the situation is completely different when it comes to organ donation.  This probably because we know that our organs will be donated when we die.  The thought of death is scary, and sentiments play a big role when it comes to organ donation. These sentiments are not just limited to the patient themselves, but also include those of family members.
  4. 4.  The organ donation statistics in India are shocking.  There are 26 people out of 1 crore people who are willing to give their organs to another human being to save their life  Compared to the UK and the USA, where the donor rate is around 30 per million, the numbers in India are bad.  Over 5 lakh people across India die every year because of the lack of availability of organs.
  5. 5.  Legal aspects  Social stigma  Ethical practices and doctor principles  ‘Doctors won’t give me the best treatment if they know I am on the donor list’  It is not done in a humane manner. THESE ARE SOME OF THE COMMON CONCERNS THAT MAKE PEOPLE HESITATE TO JOIN THE ORGAN DONOR LIST.
  6. 6.  Anyone over the age of 18 and under the age of 60 years!  A diagnosis of brain death is essential  In simple terms, brain death means the brain is not working, though all the other vital organs are healthy and working just fine.
  7. 7.  You could save a human life.  It is a selfless gesture that is a testament to your nature and humanity.  Saving a human life is incomparable to any achievement or sacrifice you will ever make.
  8. 8. FORTIS HOSPITALS RUN THE FORT (FORTIS ORGAN RETRIEVAL AND TRANSPLANT) PROGRAM – AN ETHICAL PROGRAM THAT LIST PEOPLE AS DONORS AND HELPS THOSE WHO NEED ORGANS TO SAVE THEIR LIFE.
  9. 9.  Ethical  Best doctors  Strictly guideline driven  Absolute best done to save the patient first before declaring brain death  Family sentiments are taken into account – If a family disagrees then organ harvesting shall not be done  Done in a humane manner to preserve dignity of the donor.
