This document compares the procedures and uses of IVF (in vitro fertilization) and IUI (intra-uterine insemination). IVF involves fertilizing an egg and sperm outside the body in a laboratory dish and then transferring the embryo into the uterus. IUI involves inserting washed and healthy sperm directly into the uterus. IVF is used for cases involving blocked or missing fallopian tubes or unexplained infertility, while IUI is used for mild infertility issues like low sperm count or ovulation problems. The stages and costs of each procedure are described, with IVF typically having higher costs but being more effective for infertility treatment than IUI.

Problems with ovulation.

Cervical problems.
Stages of IVF
The basic stages involved in the IVF procedure are detailed below. The whole process up to the embryo
transfer stage will usually take six to eight weeks.

Stage 2: Egg (oocyte) retrieval.
Stage 3: Fertilisation.
Stage 4: Embryo growth.
Stage 5: Embryo transfer.
Stage 6: Luteal phase support.
IUI (Intra-uterine Insemination)
Intra-uterine Insemination is used when there is any sperm related issue or total absence of sperm is
found. It is a primary choice for many couples when they are confronted with the cost and complexity of
IVF and ICSI treatments. Donor insemination is easy to perform, requires no special equipment, and may
be the only procedure performed by many physicians who use this manual. The initial step in effective
infertility treatment is to make a diagnosis. This can be accomplished with a few simple and relatively
inexpensive tests.

IVF and IUI both are used for infertility treatment but they are different from each other in following ways:
1. In IUI, one good follicle is to be searched to take the sperm; whereas in IVF, up to ve to 10follicles are
to be searched.
2. Cost of IUI is comparatively less than IVF; whereas IVF cost is about three or four times as much as IUI
cost.
3. In IUI anticipated time to be pregnant is within one year; whereas in IVF, it is expected to be within three
months of joining a clinic.
IUI procedure is timed according to a woman’s ovulationand may be performed one to two times in the
days immediately following the detection of ovulation but IVF is the most successful method of fertility
