1.Jara Nivartaka (Delay ageing Process) & Deergha Ayushkara (provide
longevity)
Ageing is an inevitable physiological process
Ayurveda consider it as swabhava of life
Modern theories – Genetic theory of ageing, Immunological theory, stress
theory, Free radical theory
Ageing – DNA damage occurs
Rasayana – anti oxidants – prevents enzymatic oxidative stress – induced
damage
Metal ions – catalyst for free radical reactions – bhasmas may behave
contrary to it
1. Shilajatu
Used in chronic debilitating disorders
Kashaya Tikta rasa, sheeta virya, tridhosha vrishya, balya, mutrala, lekhana,
yogavahi and rasayana properties
It has many rich, bioactive molecules (nutrients, iron manganese, phenols etc.)
Acts as powerful adaptogen in the wear and tear phenomenon of ageing process.
2.Swarna Bhasma
Have a significant antioxidant and restorative effects in global & focal models of
ischemia.

Significant restoration of altered values of enzymes  to near normal levels by
swarna bhasma & kushta tila kalan (Unani - 25mg/kg, orally × 10 days) 
potentials for swarna preparations in CVD.
Experimental animal model  swarna bhasma shows significantly increased
superoxide dismutase & catalase activity, two enzymes that reduce free
radical concentrations in the body
2. Vyadhi Nivartaka (Prevents disease)
Rasayana provides drug base therapy (Vyadhihara) & Remedial measures as
pathya, prasamana & prakritisthapana
Non-specific type of immunomodulation
Strengthen the immune system as a whole
Increasing the quantity & quality of the components
Immunostimulants:
Formation of healthy & patent components of immune system
Immunosuppressant's:
Prevents autoimmune response & some other non-auto immune inflammatory
diseases.

Formation of healthy & normal cells (e.g. connective tissue in RA)  prevent
misjudgment of self as non-self useful & harmful response (hypersensitivity)
 control activities of CD4+ T cells mediated immune response  killing of
antigen containing macrophages with destruction of innocent cells
Rasayana having mineral/rasa dravya  more accepted for specialty in
immune system
The rasa chikitsa texts are mentioned in the chapters describing diseases
e.g
Vasantakusumakara rasa in Prameha
Vridhachintamani rasa in Jwara
Expected mode of action is more specific with reference to system,
particular organ , tissue or even single component of immune system.
3. Prashasta Dhatu (Promotes health)
Rasayana  improves metabolic process  biotransformation & quality of
body tissue
Invigorates the body by sustaining balance between anabolic & catabolic process

Appetite, digestion, absorption to assimilation & utilization of nutrients up to
cellular level
Indication of Rasayanas in rasayanadhikar in pandu, rakta-pitta, kshaya, shosha
etc  effects like balya, kantikara,vrishya etc  indicates tehri hemopoietic &
anabolic activities
3.Conclusion
• Importance & properties of Rasayana Therapy
• Value of Rasa Chikitsa in present context as the statistics of occurrence of
diseases like AIDS,TB & DM etc.
• If such beneficial branch of Rasashastra and Rasayana therapy of Ashtanga
Ayurveda gets standardized, it will bring a revolution in ayurveda and
remarkable glory in society.
