The king should arrange for the residence of the royal physician near to the palace so that the physician can be vigilant about all things at all times. The foods and drinks of the king should be protected from poison, because, The King’s health and welfare depends on his food and drink and • The health and welfare of the country is dependent on the King.

Boiled rice mixed with poison becomes 1. Sandra – becomes thick, 2. Even when it is boiling-the contents do not overflow from the vessel. 3. Chirena Pachyate – takes a long time to cook 4. Pakvo bhavati paryushitopama – after cooking it becomes moist and stale, very soon
  4. SAVISHA ANNAPAANA LAKSHANA / FEATURES OF POISONED FOODS AND DRINKS - • 5. Mayura Kantha Tulyoshma – emits steam with the colour of the peacock’s neck (blue), 6. Moha moorcha prasekakrut – the steams and fumes from the container causes delusion, fainting and excessive salivation. 7. Heeyate varna gandhadyaihi – quickly loses its original colour, odour, taste, texture, 8. Klidyate chandrikachitaha – becomes watery and full of glistening particles.
  5. SAVISHA ANNAPAANA LAKSHANA / FEATURES OF POISONED FOODS AND DRINKS - • i. Neela Raji Rase – Blue lines appear in meat soup, ii. Tamra ksheere - coppery red lines in milk and, iii. Shyava dadhani – black ones in curds, iv. Peeta Sita takre – yellowish white lines in buttermilk, v. Ghrute paaneeya sannibha – watery lines on ghee, vi. Kaali madya ambhasoho – black lines on wines and water, vii. Harit taile arunopama – green lines in honey and crimson lines on oils.
  6. SAVISHA ANNAPAANA LAKSHANA / FEATURES OF POISONED FOODS AND DRINKS - • viii. Unripe fruits ripen (fast) and ripe ones become over ripe and decomposed. ix. Substances which are green and dry become dull in appearance and discoloured., x. Soft food substances become hard and vice versa. Xi. The flowers of the garland become · split at their edges, · fade and · assume unnatural smell.
  7. VISHADA LAKSANA (FEATURES OF THE PERSON WHO PUTS POISON):-  विषदिः श्र्यािशयष्कास्र्यो वििक्षो िीक्षते ददशिः स्िेदिेपथयिांस्त्रस्तो भीतिः स्खिनत जृम्भते !! The person who is about to poison someone will have 1. Shyava shushka Asya – dry, discoloured turns in to dark face 2. Vilaksho Veekshate dishaha – Uncertainly looks here and there(aimlessly) 3. Sveda – sweating 4. vepathuman - tremors 5. Trasta – tired, 6. Bheeta – frightened 7. Skhalati – when sleep while talking and walking 8. Jrumbhate – yawns frequently.
  8. TESTING OF POISONED FOODS – VISHANNA PAREEKSHA • प्राप्र्यान्नं सविषं त्िक्ननरेकाितविः स्फय टत्र्यनत मशखीकण्ठाभ िूिाधचवरनधचविोग्रगन्ििान् !! Upon throwing the poisoned food on fire, 1. It emits crackling sound, 2. The flame burns in a single flame, 3. The colour of smoke resembles to that of peacock’s neck (glistening blue), 4. Sometimes the flame may not come up at all. 5. It will cause emitting of very foul and strong smell.
  9. EFFECTS OF POISON ON BIRDS AND ANIMALS – VISHANNA PAREEKSHA • Eating such food, 1. Mriyate Makshikaaha - bees die, 2. Kaakaha kshaamasvaro bhavet – Crow voice becomes weakness, 3. Parrot, Dathyuha (gallinule bird) and Sarika (Mynah)- start cries at the poisoned food, just by seeing it. 4. Hamsaha praskhalati – Swan changes its gati, 5. Glaanih: jeevenjeevasya jaayate – Chukar gets exhausted.

TESTING OF POISONED FOODS – VISHANNA PAREEKSHA • 6.Chakorasya akshivairaagyam – Green pheasant’s eyes turn red, • 7.Kraunchasya madodaya: – Pond heron becomes intoxicated, • 8.Pigeon, Parabhrit (Cuckoo) and Chaktravaaka - lose their life, • 9.Udvegam yaati maarjaara: – cat becomes irritated, excited, 10. Shakrun munchati vanara: – monkey defecates wondering here and there, After confirming the poisoned food by above methods, it should be disposed away carefully. NOTE; The toxicity of poison decreases when seen by peacock.
  11. DISEASES CAUSED BY POISONED FOOD – (VISHA ANNAJA VIKARA) – • External effects: A. The touch of poisoned foods produces 1. Kandu( Itching) and 2. Daha( Irritation), 3. Sarva shareera daha(Burning sensation all over the body), 4. Sthanika daha(Burning sensation at the site of touch), 5. Jwara(Fever), 6. Vedana(Pain), 7. Eruptions, 8. Numbness 9. Falling of the nails and hairs and 10. Sopha( Swelling).
  12. DISEASES CAUSED BY POISONED FOOD – (VISHA ANNAJA VIKARA) – • The treatment shall be I. Bathing (washing), II. Pouring with water processed with anti-poisonous drugs, III. Application of paste of • sevya (ushira), • Amruta • Candana (sandalwood),
  13. DISEASES CAUSED BY POISONED FOOD – (VISHA ANNAJA VIKARA) – • A. Local effect in oral cavity: Poisoned food inside mouth causes; I. Excess of salivation, II. Inactivity of the tongue and lips, III. Burning sensation, IV. Tingling of the teeth, V. Inability to perceive taste and VI. Stiffness of the lower jaw.
  14. DISEASES CAUSED BY POISONED FOOD – (VISHA ANNAJA VIKARA) – • The treatment shall be A) mouth Gandusa( gargling) with decoction of medicines processed with sevya etc , b) and all other therapies for the mouth which are anti-poisonous in nature.
  15. DISEASES CAUSED BY POISONED FOOD – (VISHA ANNAJA VIKARA) – • B. Reaching stomach it produces 1. Sveda(Sweating), 2. Murcha(Fainting), 3. Adhmana(Flatulence), 4. Mada(Toxicity), 5. Bhrama (Giddiness), 6. Romaharsha(Horripilations), 7. Chardi(Vomiting), 8. Daha(Burning sensation), 9. Loss of movement of the eyes and heart, 10. And appearance of black dots all over the body.
  16. DISEASES CAUSED BY POISONED FOOD – (VISHA ANNAJA VIKARA) – • C. Reaching of the intestines it produces 1. Vamana (Vomiting of many colours), 2. Ati mutra pravritti(Excess of urination), 3. Ati mala(Purgation), 4. Tandra(Drowsiness), 5. Karshya( Emaciation), 6. Pandu(Pallor), 7. Udara(Enlargement of the abdomen/ascites),& 8. Balakshaya(loss of strength).
  17. DISEASES CAUSED BY POISONED FOOD – (VISHA ANNAJA VIKARA) – • For both these conditions the patient should be administered a) Vamana (emesis) and b) Virechana (purgation therapies), c) followed by Nasya (nasal medication), d) Anjana (collyriums) and e) drinking of decoction prepared from Haridra – Turmeric Rhizome – Curcuma Longa, and • Daruharidra (Berberis aristata), • Guda- jaggery,
  18. INCOMPATIBLE FOODS (VIRUDDHA AHARA) :- • विरुद्धमवि च आहारं विध्याद्विषगरोिमम् Viruddha means ; incompatible food or opposite foods which are not fit to body, • Ahara means ; food On many occasions, consuming two food items together or a particular type of food processing may render the food toxic, It is called as incompatible food. • Even incompatible foods should be considered similar to visa(poison) / artificial poisoning.
  19. INCOMPATIBLE FOODS (VIRUDDHA AHARA) :- • EXAMPLES: • 1. Anupa mamsa with Masha, Kshaudra, Ksheera and Virudaka – Meat of animals of marshy regions is incompatible with black gram, honey, milk and germinated grains. 2. Bisa, Mulaka (Radish – Raphanus sativus) or Guda jaggery is incompatible with fish. 3. Fish with milk, especially Chilichima variety of fist with milk is incompatible. 4. All sour substances are incompatible with milk 5. Sour fruits with milk is not recommended.
  20. INCOMPATIBLE FOODS (VIRUDDHA AHARA) :- • 6. After consuming green leafy vegetables and radish, drinking milk should be avoided. 7. (Kukkuta) Chicken and Spotted deer should not be taken along with curds 8. Uncooked meat along with bile 9. radish along with black gram 10. Sheep meat along with leaves of Kusumba herb 11. Germinated grains along with Bisa 12. Lakucha Phala along with black gram soup (masha supa) 13. Banana along with butter milk is not recommended 14. Curds along with Tala phala (Palm date)
  21. INCOMPATIBLE FOODS (VIRUDDHA AHARA) :- • 15. Pippali, Maricha and honey 16. Kakamachi along with jiggery 17. Black pepper along with fish or during digestion of fish – 18. Mixing of milk, beer and Krishara (rice – green gram dish) 19. Mixing of equal quantities of honey, ghee, muscle fat, oil and water in their combination of any 2, 3 or all of the following is not recommended 20. Mixing Honey along with ghee, even in unequal proportions, should not be consumed along with rain water as an after drink.
  22. DEFINITION OF VIRUDDHA – INCOMPATIBLE - • र्यत्ककक्चचत्दोषं उत्क्िेश्र्य न हरेत्तत्सिासत: विरुदिि ् !! In brief, whichever food or activity that causes increase of Dosha’s but does not expel the Dosha ‘s out of the body is termed as Viruddha. Note: 1.In Panchakarma treatment also, Dosha is increased and then expelled out of body. 2. But in Panchakarma, though there is increase of Dosha, because they are expelled out, there is no harm. 3. But in Viruddha Ahara, · the food causes only increase of Dosha, leading to toxic symptoms.
  23. VIRODHA CHIKITSA – SYMPTOM BASED TREATMENT. • व्र्यार्यािक्स्ननिदीप्ताक्ननिर्यिः स्थबिशामिनाि ् विरोध्र्यवप न पीडार्यय सात्म्र्यिल्पं च भोजनि ् !! In those a) who exercise regularly, b) who are habituated to oily fatty food, c) who have good digestion power, d) is young, e) and strengthful, the incompatible food will not cause any ill effects. In those, 1. Who are habituated (sathmya) to incompatible food & 2. In those who take low quantities of incompatible food for a long period of time, the ill effects will not be seen.
  24. TRAYOPASTAMBHA - THREE PILLARS OF LIFE
  25. AHARA • आहारशर्यनाब्रह्िचर्ययर्ययवक्त्र्या प्रर्योक्जतयिः शरीरं िार्यवते ननत्र्यिागारमिि िारणयिः !! 1. Ahara – food, 2. Shayana – Sleep and 3. Abrahmacharya (non-celibecy) – properly indulged, support the body constantly just like the house is supported by the pillars.
  26. NIDRA/SLEEP • ननरार्यत्तं सयखं दयखं पयक्ष्टिः काश्र्यं बिाबिि ् िृषता क्िीबता ज्ञानंज्ञानं जीवितं न च !! 1. Happiness and unhappiness, 2. Proper nourishment or emaciation, 3. Strength and debility, 4. Sexual powers and impotence, 5. Knowledge and ignorance, 6. Life and its absence (death) – all are dependent on sleep.
  27. NIDRA/SLEEP • अकािे अप्रसङ्गाच्च न च ननरा ननषेविता सयखार्ययषी पराकय र्यावत् कािरात्रत्रररिापरा !! 1. Akaala nidra – sleep at improper time, 2. Atiprasanga – excess sleep • 3. Na nidra – lack of sleep – these three destroys health.
  28. SLEEPING DURING DAY TIME IS BENEFICIAL • a) During summer, because in that season, Vata undergoes mild increase, dryness is more, nights are short; Day sleeping during other seasons causes ; b) Kapha and Pitta increase. Day sleeping is good for 1. Those who are exhausted by excessive speaking, 2. Riding, 3. Walking, 4. Wine, 5. Woman (sexual intercourse), 6. Carrying heavy load, 7. Physical activities, 8. Tired by anger, 9. Grief & 10. Fear,
  29. WHO SHOULD NOT HAVE DAY SLEEP? • बहयिेदिः कफिः स्िप्र्ययिः स्ने हननत्र्याश्च नाहनन विषातविः कण्ठरोगी च नयि जातय ननशास्िवप !! Obese, • In whom kapha is aggravated, • Who take regular oily food, • Those who are suffering from poisoning and throat disease •
  30. ANIDRA/LOSS OF SLEEP • Leads to 1. Angamardha( Squeezing pain in the body parts), 2.Shira gaurva( Heaviness of the head), 3. Jrumbha(Too much of yawning), 4. Jadyam(Lassitude), 5. Glani(Exhaustion )(even without strain), 6. Brama(Giddiness), 7. Pakthi(Indigestion), 8. Tandra(Stupor) and 9. Diseases of vata origin.
  31. TREATMENT FOR ANIDRA • Those suffering from very little sleep (or no sleep at all), should indulge in the use of milk, • wine, • meat soup and • curds (as food), • oil massage and • mild squeezing (of the body), • bath,
  32. ABRAHMACHARYA – NON CELIBACY / SEXUAL ACTIVITY • Sex – the person should avoid the woman who is not lying with her face upward, • who is in her menstrual period, • who is not liked, • whose activities are displeasing, • whose private parts are dirty and • who is troublesome; • who is very obese • or very emaciated, • who has recently delivered and • who is pregnant; • The other woman (other than his wife), • Avoid organs which are non-sexual, (oral etc) and • also the days forbidden for sex, • avoid violence during sex. • Should not indulge in sex after a heavy meal, • without keen intention, • when hungry, • when his body is in uncomfortable postures, • when thirsty; • with children, • with the aged (old women), • when troubled by other urges (such as of urine, faeces etc.) and • when he is himself a patient
  33. ABRAHMACHARYA – NON CELIBACY / SEXUAL ACTIVITY • सेिेत काितिः कािं तृप्तो िाजीकृ तां दहिे त्रर्यहादिसन्तशरदोिः पक्षादिषावननदाघर्योिः !! 1. During Hemanta and shishira (winter) the person can indulge in copulation (daily) as much as he likes after making use of aphrodisiacs (and obtaining strength); 2. Once in three days in Vasanta (spring) and Sarat (autumn) and 3.Once a fortnight in Varsha (rainy) and Nidagha (summer).
  34. IMPROPER INDULGENCE IN THE WOMAN (SEXUAL INTERCOURSE). • 1. Giddiness, 2.Exhaustion, 3.Weakness of the thighs, 4. Loss of strength, 5.Depletion of tissues, 6. Loss of acuity of senses and 7. Premature death
  35. DISCIPLINED (CONTROLLED) INDULGENCE IN THE WOMEN. • 1. Good memory, 2.Intelligence, 3.Long life, 4.Health, 5.Nourishment, 6.Acuity of sense organs, 7.Reputation, 8.Strength and 9.Slow ageing
  36. • After the act, a. The man should indulge himself in bath, b. Applying scented paste, c. Exposure to cool breeze, d. Drinking of syrup prepared from sugar candy, • Cold water, • Milk, • Meat juice, • Soup, • E. Then go to sleep; by these, the vigour of the body returns quickly to its abode again.
