  2. 2. Eating habits established now impact food habits and health later in life. Under-nutrition can impair a child's cognitive development as well as their ability to explore their environment. NUTRITION
  3. 3. Toddlers: • Need the necessary nutrients from food to enhance their developmental milestones. • Need enough physical activity and rest to promote healthy development. NUTRITION
  4. 4. Eating the right food and right amount at the right time. This helps prevent disease and promote optimum health. WHAT IS GOOD NUTRITION?
  5. 5. • 18-24 months, toddlers are able to use their tongue to clean their lips and have well- developed chewing movements. • They have a strong need for independence and self-feeding. • This must be encouraged! TODDLERS & FEEDING
  6. 6. 1000- 1400 calories? Don’t get fixated on calories • Protein • Grains • Dairy • Vegetables • Fruits • Vitamins and Minerals TODDLER NUTRITION GUIDELINES
  7. 7. TODDLER NUTRITION GUIDELINES One tablespoon of food per year of age. Snacks are crucial as toddlers can’t eat a lot at once. Must avoid allowing them to graze on high SUGAR & FAT foods. This lower’s their appetite for nutritional foods at meal times.
