FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS TO GLOBAL MARKET LEADER
DHL was founded in 1969 and became the pioneer of the air express indus-
try by personally shipping documents from San Francisco to Honolulu. The
name DHL is formed from the first letter of the last names of the founders:
Adrian Dalsey, Larry Hillblom und Robert Lynn.
The DHL network grew with incredible pace. The company expanded
westward from Hawaii into the Far East and Pacific Rim, then the Middle
East, Africa and Europe. New services were continually developed and in
1977 DHL also started to forward parcels as well as documents. In 1982
DHL boosted its growth with the addition of 30 new countries and terri-
tories. The year after, DHL became the first air express forwarder to serve
Eastern European countries. Shortly after that, DHL entered into a joint
venture with China and became the first express company active there.
At the beginning of 2002, Deutsche Post World Net became the major
shareholder in DHL and 100% shareholding was completed by the end of
that year. In 2003, Deutsche Post World Net bundled all its entire express
and logistics business under the DHL brand. The Swiss logistics company
Danzas, acquired in 2000, was also integrated into the group. With the
acquisition of Exel in December 2005, Deutsche Post World Net further
strengthened its logistics power.
Since 2009, the Group has been trading under the name of Deutsche Post
DHL. The new name stands for clear structures, a new transparency in the
Group and integrated solutions for customers.

WELCOME TO DHL
Welcome
DHL − The Logistics Company for the World
DHL is the global market leader in the logistics industry and 'The logistics
company for the world'. DHL commits its expertise in international ex-
press, air and ocean freight, road and rail transport, contract logistics and
international mail services to its customers. A global network composed of
more than 220 countries and territories and 300,000 employees worldwide
offers customers superior service quality and local knowledge to satisfy
their supply chain requirements. DHL accepts its social responsibility by
supporting climate protection, disaster management and education.
DHL is part of Deutsche Post DHL. The Group generated revenue of more
than €46 billion in 2009.
DHL aims to fulfill the highest customer demands. The company builds
on the most up-to-date technologies and guarantees a fast and reliable
service with roughly 2,500 employees in Switzerland.

Basic Products
DHL Express offers an extensive range of national and international pro-
ducts and services:
CO2
NEUTRAL PARCEL DISPATCH WITH GOGREEN
DHL Express is the first express service provider in Switzerland to offer
you the option of shipping parcels and letters in a carbon-neutral way.
Items posted at one of the over 220 service points will even be transported
in a carbon-neutral way at no extra charge.
As a DHL Express contract customer, you have the option of offsetting
carbon emissions generated by the transport of your mail items: the
GOGREEN surcharge is CHF 1 for international shipments and CHF 0.10
for national parcels. The CO2
emissions for every shipment are calculated
and documented in an annual report for each individual customer, who
will then receive a verified environmental standards certificate from the
Societé Générale de Surveillance. As a result of these findings, DHL is
investing in numerous CO2
-reducing initiatives. In 2009, over 100,000
shipments from Switzerland alone were already transported with
GOGREEN, which corresponds to a compensation of more than 600t of
carbon dioxide.
DHL is continually developing new GOGREEN products and services and
commits itself to operating in an environmentally sound manner by the
development of sustainable express and logistics services.

Growth Factors
• Globalization: industry and trade are increasingly active throughout
Europe and the world.
• Digitalization: electronic trade is increasing the number of shipments in
the express and parcel business. Electronic trade is primarily a substitu-
te for making purchases in a shop, creating new potential for the CEP
sector. This leads eventually to an increase in the number of shipments
in the express and parcel business.
• Liberalization: the Swiss parcel market was opened up in January 2004.
• Fastest possible delivery as cost optimization and competitive advantage
• By optimizing the flow of goods, the delivery warehouses can be concen-
trated and as a result freight goods can be converted into CEP consign-
ments with direct deliveries. Domestic Express Market 2008 (value based)

COMMITMENT TO THE ENVIRONMENT
As globally leading express and logistics provider, DHL accepts its global

sures, DHL Switzerland is making a large contribution towards the company-

fleet of diesel vehicles to delivery vans powered by biogas.
• We use low-noise, 757-SF-type cargo aircraft out of the DHL gateways in
Basel and Geneva.
• 85% of our connections to sea ports (container) are made using rail.
