WHEN PEOPLE THINK OF NEW YORK, their minds immediately turn to ‘The
Big Apple’ (a.k.a., New York City. But the State of New York is quite a bit more than
just this busy, densely populated, popular tourist area. We’ve all heard that if you can
make it there, you can make it anywhere–so why not make it to a place located just
outside of the hustle and bustle of New York City? I’m referring to the suburbs that
make up Westchester County, New York.
Located in the scenic Hudson Valley region, Westchester County occupies
approximately 450 square miles and possesses just under 100,000 residents.
Established in 1683, the county gets its name from the city of Chester, England. Due
mostly to the upper-middle class development of communities during the late 19th
century, following quick population growth, Westchester became the first suburban
area of its scale in the entire world to develop!
2. Why Westchester?
I KNOW YOU’RE ASKING YOURSELF, what could be more exciting than New
York City? Westchester County’s various towns act as a popular suburb bordering
‘The Big Apple’, as well as playing the role of gateway to the Hudson River Valley. If
you’re a fan of New York City, but don’t find yourself wishing to live in the dense
city atmosphere, there’s no better place to live than Westchester. It’s a short train ride
away, and if you’re traveling by car, it’s only an hour or less away! Unless you’re
actually living in the city itself, the train from Westchester to New York City is the

Westchester does not only give you easy-access to the city, but to the Hudson River
Valley as well. This area provides an enormous variety of outdoor activities and

5. Westchester also contains a rich history, so if you’re a history buff, or are simply
interested in learning about the history in the area, there are tons of historical sites and
museums to check out and even take the whole family to!

Whether you’re interested in Westchester County’s very own ghost story, The Legend
of Sleepy Hollow, the magnificent home of Rockefeller, or the two-acre cemetery for
nearly all the village of Ossining’s early settlers and 119 known veterans from the
Revolutionary War through World War II, there are tons of historical sites, exhibits,
