  6. 6. Is This Book for You Life is not like a walk in the park, that’s for sure, and it’s definitely not a box of chocolates, that’s sweet but unreal; life is hard, and as time goes by it becomes even harder for some people as they grow older, their anxiety levels rise, and their everyday routines seem to suck their years away. I have written this book to help people like these; people who feel that they’ve reached a dead end, who are down, who have lost all energy and abandoned their dreams for a better future. Fear not, I’m not a guru. I’m just somebody who once found myself in a very bad place, and decided that I would do whatever I possibly could to survive, and if possible, improve my life. 7. 7. Introduction – "Getting Things Done with Evernote" I was looking for a way to make my life easier. Even though I had moments when I felt highly productive, the vast majority of time I felt like I was spinning my wheels. Then, I discovered an incredible business organization and management program designed by David Allen. I knew that there had to be a better way to get things done. I’d heard great things about GTD, and when I heard that Evernote had incorporated several tools into its software, I decided to check it out. I discovered that the system has become a trademark for high-functioning businesses and professionals. By applying a few basic skills and streamlining the process with Evernote function- ability, I am no longer sifting through emails, trying to decide what to do next, and wondering what I did with that last important memo. I now enjoy the satisfaction and freedom of feeling that I have every aspect of my life, both professional and personal, under control! Coupled with highly versatile Evernote software, the system of ‘Getting Things Done’ has brought a sense of proficiency into all areas of my life. I now find it is possible to systematize an extremely complex and lengthy list of responsibilities clearly and with purpose. I can relax knowing that I am able to achieve heightened levels of productivity. 8. 8. Part One: Evernote 101 - The Basics (Overview and Introduction) ‘Getting Things Done’ is built on five phases for managing workflow. Overseeing these actions requires the systematic clarification and processing of all aspects of one’s life. The basic components of GTD require the five stage implementation of this workflow process. 1) First collect the ‘stuff’ that dominates your attention. 2) Process the elements according to their significance and desired result. 3) Organize everything systematically. 4) Review all elements according to their purpose in your life. 5) Do what is needed to achieve the desired outcome. 9. 9. Getting Projects Creatively Under Way - The Five Phases of Project Planning We can, in fact, rely on our natural ability to plan, particularly when we integrate the procedures with these five phases. By thinking about projects systematically, we initiate action. In order to determine purpose, the first question we need to ask ourselves is "why?" What is the true purpose of each activity we engage in, and what is the ultimate outcome? Fully understanding purpose provides clarity and allows for cooperative effort and creative implementation. This question must not be ignored. By establishing purpose, we facilitate results. Simply by asking "why?" we define success, create measures for decision making, clarify necessary resources, provide motivation and focus, and expand available resources and options. Clarification allows for successful outcomes. We feel good about results when we understand what our desired outcome is. 10. 10. Part Two: GTD: Quick and Efficient Execution of Evernote in 7 Days. The application of the GTD workflow strategies, combined with the Evernote system, allows a sense of freedom and ‘relaxed control’ that many people have never experienced before. With the GTD workflow principles, a series of step-by-step processes are implemented. In David Allen’s program, these practices are described in detail, as they pertain to getting control of the physical office, both away from and within the home. In this book, I plan to provide some of these general principles while specifically relating them to a set-up using the Evernote system.
