  5. 5. the present situation analysis About 50% of the surface of the public space in Cherkasy exists of asphalt ; Increasing number of cars are consuming the available public space; Increasing number of citizens riding in cars, see it as a right to use al the asphalt surfaces in public space.The impact : A bad use of the public space: More use of cars than is necessary at small distances Pollution and dangerous situations (800 accidents a year!) Public transport stick up in traffic jams the alternative transport as using a bicycle is now not possible A less attractive city to attract investments and tourists7-4-2011 cherkasy urban transport strategy 5

So Cherkasy needs a better city transport systemTo support : it´s economical aim to attract tourists and tourists investments as a city of wellness improving it’s image as an industrial polluted city a more economical land use and use of means of transportation. a prosperous economical development of the central area of the city as the heart of the whole Oblast for cultural life, fun shopping and other leisure facilities. a healthy and save environment a more sustainable and economic use of (fossil) energy7-4-2011 cherkasy urban transport strategy 6

So Cherkasy needs an integrated vision on city transport Transport by private car, public transport, bicycle use, walking and use of taxi , are part of one transport system that has to be integrated and optimised. Different types of transport have their advantages and disadvantages in terms of energy efficiency, environmental quality, use of space, cost efficiency comparing private cost and public cost , logistical quality and comfort. so the Chercasy transport system has to be updated in these terms.7-4-2011 cherkasy urban transport strategy 7
