  • A world famous landmarkView from Lincoln ParkSoon after its completion the Golden Gate Bridge already enjoyed worldwide fame, not only because the bridge was breaking records, but also thanks to the elegant Art Deco design of the two huge towers and the magnificent surroundings near the Pacific Ocean. The eye catching orange-red color of the bridge also helped its popularity. The color was suggested by engineer Irving Morrow, who thought the traditional gray color was too boring. The Golden Gate Bridge has now long lost its record of the longest bridge, but it is still one of the world's most famous structures
  • Before the bridge was built, the only practical short route between San Francisco and what is now Marin County was by boat across a section of San Francisco Bay. Ferry service began as early as 1820, with regularly scheduled service beginning in the 1840s for purposes of transporting water to San Francisco. Many wanted to build a bridge to connect San Francisco to Marin County. San Francisco was the largest American city still served primarily by ferry boats. Because it did not have a permanent link with communities around the bay, the city's growth rate was below the national average

  • Getting to the bridgeThe Golden Gate Bridge is located at the Presidio Park and can easily be reached by bus or car. The most pleasant way to reach the bridge however is by walking either from the Marina District to the east or from Baker Beach to the west of the bridge. Both routes will lead you through a park, and especially the route along the east is very popular

    2. 2. SUSPENSION BRIDGE•A suspension bridge is defined to be as a bridge in which the load bearing portion named as deck is hung belowby suspension cables on vertical suspenders•Suspension bridges in their simplest form were originally made from rope and wood.•Modern suspension bridges use a box section roadway supported by high tensile strength cables.•In the early nineteenth century, suspension bridges used iron chains for cables.•The cables are made of thousands of individual steel wires bound tightly together.STEEL- BEACAUSE ITS STRONG UNDER TENSION CONSTRUCTION_BRIDGES_GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE SUCHI.TANNA_0827_4TH YEAR
    3. 3. SUSPENSION BRIDGE•Suspension bridges tend to be the most expensive to build.•A suspension bridge suspends the roadway from huge main cables, which extend from one end of the bridge tothe other. These cables rest on top of high towers and have to be securely anchored into the bank at either endof the bridge. The towers enable the main cables to be draped over long distances.•Most of the weight or load of the bridge is transferred by the cables to the anchorage systems. These areimbedded in either solid rock or huge concrete blocks.•Inside the anchorages, the cables are spread over a large area to evenly distribute the load and to prevent thecables from breaking free.
