We can change that by training them to speak in English for a week. As the saying goes in Tamil “Of all donations, Education is the best donation”.
We went to all the classes in our school to collect English books for their new library in school.
We made catchy videos to increase the number of books the students gave to us. Click me
We also awarded house points for each book given by our students.
We went to the school, informed the Head Mistress about the project, got her approval and introduced ourselves among the students on day one.
They were very much pleased to see us the next day. We arranged the library and started training them on day two.
Each of us (The team and volunteers) took 1 or 2 children and trained them. We told stories, explained the meanings of words and asked them the same. They were able to answer well. They showed tremendous interest in learning English.
Such methods of training during the week helped them and they showed lotsof improvement. They also come forward and read stories like ‘The Magic Fish’ and ‘Three Fairies’.
On the last day, they came up to answer and introduced themselves in English as compared to the involuntary introduction in the beginning.
