Week 2: Discover Phase 1 decide to take our own DESIGN Challenge & produce the HMW Question: How might we encourage good garbage dumping habits among undeserved children in Kampong Pondok Pucung, Tangerang, INDONESIA? Week 3: Discover Phase 2 did our research by initiating an event ‘COLOR YOUR KITE’ day

Of Community Leader (Ibu RT, + 40 yrs old) The Quotes ‘I don’t litter, except when I buy snacks from the hawker’, ‘I play with used ice cream sticks’ -children need leaders, role model-, - children are competitive-,-there is difference between gender- The Quotes ‘Everything is okay, there is no problem (garbage, relationship between native and temporal dweller, security and so on)’, ‘It is nice for the children to have activity’, - the status seemed to be important-, -competitive and like to showing off; The Quotes ‘The garbage is the responsibility of every house owner, including to clean the garbage on the street’, ‘we don’t have any collective community garbage dumping area’, ‘every local clan have their own collective garbage dumping and will be burned’, ‘it would be nice if the kampong have garbage bank’
  6. 6. THE SURPRISE! Our Gems is not about THE GARBAGE! THE CHALLENGE How might we encourage good garbage dumping habits among undeserved children in Kampong Pondok Pucung, Tangerang, INDONESIA? IT IS ABOUT VALUES! There are perspectives changing, thus changing in values within the community that leads to the littering and garbage problem!
  7. 7. THE CHALLENGE How might we encourage good garbage dumping habits among undeserved children in Kampong Pondok Pucung, Tangerang, INDONESIA? The THEMES: 1. VALUE (the biggest cluster, where values seemed to be the biggest problem faced by the community) 2. HOPE (derived from the physical change that the community expecting) 3. HYGIENE (hygiene problems comes from the littering and the ways in which the children play)
  8. 8. THE CHALLENGE How might we encourage good garbage dumping habits among undeserved children in Kampong Pondok Pucung, Tangerang, INDONESIA? The THEMES: 1. VALUE (the biggest cluster, where values seemed to be the biggest problem faced by the community) 2. HOPE (derived from the physical change that the community expecting) 3. HYGIENE (hygiene problems comes from the littering and the ways in which the children play) is a challenge faced by the community because… is a challenge faced by the community because… is a challenge faced by the community because… THE INSIGHT STATEMENTS: (VALUE) (a) …It is being ignored – regarding the good values. (b)….it is become a character as it is becoming a habit – regarding the bad values. (c)…there is no sanction/punishment. (HOPE) (a)…the community felt exhausted with the current conditions. (b)…there is no initiator to generate their hopes. (c)….the individual concerns still stronger than that of the community concerns. (HYGIENE) (a)…the influence of having cluttered dwelling area. (b)…every space considered appropriate garbage dumping space (c)…everything done, especially by the kids are considered okay/normal
  9. 9. THE ‘OLD’ OUR ‘HMW’ QUESTIONS How might we encourage good garbage dumping habits among undeserved children in Kampong Pondok Pucung, Tangerang, INDONESIA? THE INSIGHT: (VALUE) (3)…there is no sanction/punishment. (HOPE) (2)…there is no initiator to generate their hopes. (HYGIENE) (1)…the influence of having uncluttered dwelling area. the‘NEW’ OUR ‘HMW’ QUESTIONS HOW MIGHT WE GENERATE THE COMMUNITY (of Kampong Pondok Pucung, Tangerang, INDONESIA) TO KEEP THEIR KAMPONG UNCLUTTERED/ORDERLY IN ORDER TO LIFT UP THEIR PRIDE?
  10. 10. REFLECTION: • Again!, these DT-HCD methods didn’t stop to surprise us! The IDEATE phase allows us to see deeply on what is really going on – It might seemed that the method change our focus but what it does actually is providing a way to enhance our problem identification. • The methods also showed that under pressure our team gaining precious insights and become more creative and innovative in our thinking and action. the‘NEW’ OUR ‘HMW’ QUESTIONS How might we generate the Community (of Kampong Pondok Pucung, Tangerang, INDONESIA) to keep their kampong uncluttered/orderly in order to lift up their pride?
