We use irregular verbs a lot when speaking, less when writing. Of course, the most famous English verb of all, the verb "to be", is irregular. What is the difference between regular verbs and irregular verbs? Verbos consistem em formas REGULARES e IRREGULARES. Verbos irregulares são uma característica importante do Inglês. Nós usamos verbos irregulares muito ao falar, menos quando se escreve. Claro, o mais famoso verbo Inglês de tudo, o verbo 'ser', é irregular. Qual é a diferença entre os verbos regulares e verbos irregulares? Base Form Past Simple Past Participle With regular verbs, the rule is simple... The past simple and past participle always end in -ed: finish finished finished stop stopped stopped work worked worked But with irregular verbs, there is no rule... Sometimes the verb changes completely: sing sang sung Sometimes there is a partial change: buy bought bought Sometimes there is no change: cut cut cut A VERB is an action word. A verb tells what the subject does, is, or what happens to it. (If you ask, “What is subject doing?” The answer is a verb.)

  13. 13. GRAMMAR - VERBS - THE SIMPLE TENSES 001 13 | P a g e FUNCTIONS OF THE SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE 1] To talk about general truths, that is, to talk about something that was true in the past, is true now, and will be true in the future (e.g., The sun rises in the East. Nurses work hard. Water boils at 100 °C.) 2] To talk about habits or rituals (e.g., I pay income tax every year. She drinks coffee. We watch T.V. all the time. The Brazilian football team never loses to England. It never rains in California.) NOTE The use of a HELPING VERB – “TO DO” FUNÇÕES DOS SIMPLES PRESENTE INDICATIVO 1] falar sobre verdades gerais, ou seja, para falar sobre algo que era verdade no passado, é verdade agora e será verdadeiro no futuro (por exemplo, o sol nasce no leste. As enfermeiras trabalham duro. Água ferve a 100 ° C.) 2] falar sobre hábitos ou rituais (por exemplo, eu pago imposto de renda todos os anos. Ela bebe café. Assistimos TV o tempo todo. O time de futebol brasileiro nunca perde a Inglaterra. Nunca chove em Califórnia.) NOTA: O USO DE UM VERBO DE AJUDA – "TO DO" ["PARA FAZER"] REGULAR VERBS are conjugated by adding “ED” to the end of the word, so “TALK” becomes “TALKED”, for instance. Where a REGULAR VERB already ends in “E”, ADD “D” to the end, SO “CONJUGATE” becomes “CONJUGATED”. VERBOS REGULARES SÃO conjugados por acrescentando "ED" para o final da palavra, para que "FALAR" se torna "FALOU", por exemplo. Onde um VERBO REGULAR já termina em "E", adicione "D" ATÉ O FIM, então "CONJUGATE" se torna "CONJUGATED".

  15. 15. GRAMMAR - VERBS - THE SIMPLE TENSES 001 15 | P a g e FUNCTIONS OF THE SIMPLE PAST TENSE The Simple Past verb tense has one primary function: to express an activity or situation that started in the past and ended in the past at a particular and specified time. AS FUNÇÕES DO TEMPO SIMPLES PASSADO O tempo de verbo Simples Passado têm uma função primária: exprimir uma atividade ou a situação que começou no passado e terminou no passado em um tempo determinado e especificado. Here are some examples: I finished the book last night. You didn't do all your homework last week. He travelled to Spain in 1985. We got up at seven this morning. Points to remember: 1. Use the correct helping verb ("to do") when forming Simple Past questions (e.g., Why did you eat all the cake?) and also the negative (e.g., I did not eat all the cake!) 2. Know the correct conjugation of irregular verbs. 3. Learn the spelling rules for verbs that end with "-y" (e.g., "study" becomes "studied") and some consonants (e.g., "drop" becomes "dropped"). 4. Don't confuse the function of the Simple Past with the "unspecified time" function of the Present Perfect (if the time is specified, use the Simple Past, if it is not, use the Present Perfect).
  16. 16. GRAMMAR - VERBS - THE SIMPLE TENSES 001 16 | P a g e Pontos a serem lembrados: 1. Usar o verbo de ajuda correto "to do" ['para fazer'] formando perguntas Simples Passadas e também o negativo. 2. Saiba a conjugação correta de verbos irregulares. 3. Aprenda as regras de ortografia de verbos naquele fim com '-y' e alguns consoantes 4. Não confunda a função do Passado Simples com 'o tempo não especificado' a função do Presente Perfeito (se o tempo for especificado, use o Passado Simples, se não for, use o Presente Perfeito). USAGE OF THE SIMPLE FUTURE TENSE 1] AFFIRMATIVE I WILL RUN. YOU WILL RUN. HE/SHE/IT WILL RUN. WE WILL RUN. YOU WILL ALL RUN OR (YOU ALL WILL RUN). THEY WILL RUN. 2] NEGATIVE I WILL NOT RUN. YOU WILL NOT RUN. HE/SHE/IT WILL NOT RUN. WE WILL NOT RUN. NONE OF YOU WILL RUN. THEY WILL NOT RUN OR I WON’T RUN. YOU WON’T RUN. HE/SHE/IT WON’T RUN. WE WON’T RUN. YOU WON’T RUN. THEY WON’T RUN. HOW WILL HE/SHE/IT RUN? WHAT WILL WE RUN ON? HOW OFTEN WILL ANY OF YOU RUN? WHEN WILL THEY RUN? FUNCTIONS OF THE SIMPLE FUTURE TENSE The Future Simple tense has two functions: 1. To talk about something that will or will not happen in the future (e.g., I will never stop learning.), and 2. To express willingness (e.g., Mary: "Someone is knocking at the door." John: "I'll get it.") *“I’ll” = “ I will”+ FUNÇÕES DO FUTURO SIMPLES TENSO O Futuro Simples tenso tem duas funções:
  18. 18. GRAMMAR - VERBS - THE SIMPLE TENSES 001 18 | P a g e 1. Para falar sobre algo que vai ou não acontecer no futuro 2. Expressar vontade Points to remember: Learn when to use "will" and when to use "be going to." Use of the Present Progressive/Present Continuous for the future is also sometimes a challenge when studying the Future tenses. Remember that you can use the Present Progressive with a future meaning. Pontos para lembrar-se: Aprenda quando usar "will" ['fazem'] e quando usar "be going to" ['estar indo a.'] O uso do Presente Progressivo/Presente Contínuo para o futuro é também às vezes um desafio estudando os Futuros tempos. Lembre-se de que você possa usar o Presente Progressivo com uma futura significação.
