  52. 52. Jerome Kreuser In 1995, Jerome Kreuser at World Bank Headquarters authored a study that introduced us to a larger world community. He became an OGC Board member but soon had to leave because of cancer. OGC – 20 Years 1994 – 2014 52
  53. 53. Jim McCrystal Jim McCrystal was a National Geographic VP and OGC director. OGC – 20 Years 1994 – 2014 53 Had Jim stayed with National Geo, he would have made their vast map collection available via open interfaces. Jim’s participation helped raise OGC’s visibility.
  54. 54. Andy Updegrove OGC – 20 Years 1994 – 2014 54 Andy Updegrove, a leading technology consortium lawyer, helped write the original OGC Bylaws.Andy has continued to provide legal counsel and practical guidance over the years.

Emil Horvath Emil and other founding members of the Federal Geographic Data Committee – Dick Liston (SCS), Maury Nyquist (National Park Service), and Bill Goran (USACERL) were OGF and then OGC proponents. OGC – 20 Years 1994 – 2014 55 Emil Horvath was an original member of the GRASS Interagency Steering Committee and the boards of the Open GRASS Foundation and the OGC. He was head of the GIS project at the Soil Conservation Service (SCS, now Natural Resources Conservation Service).
  56. 56. Sam Bacharach Sam Bacharach was an active OGC Technical Committee member from the start. While at Intergraph, Sam negotiated adoption of the first released OGC standard at Cambridge University in 1997.   57. 57. Jim Farley OGC – 20 Years 1994 – 2014 57 At the Center for Advanced Spatial Technologies (CAST) at the University of Arkansas, Jim Farley integrated GRASS with various software products. He was a key participant in meetings that led to the OGC Technical Committee. Jim was a founding OGC staff member and later took a position with Oracle. Jim talks with Harry Niedzwiadek.

Charles Roswell Through decades of standards work in the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) and its predecessor organizations, and at NATO, Charles Roswell anticipated the need for OGC’s interoperability standards. He was a key player in making these standards a reality. Charles helped forge successful relationships between OGC, ISO TC211 and ANSI/INCITS L1.   59. 59. Jeff Labonte, Terry Fisher and Geoconnections Jeff Labonte, head of Geoconnections in Canada, was responsible for much OGC project activity in Canada. OGC – 20 Years 1994 – 2014 59
  60. 60. Terry Fisher An international standards veteran, Terry Fisher led Canada’s GeoConnections to use OGC as a resource to address Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure (CGDI) requirements. This led to the CGDI becoming the largest single implementation community for OGC standards. Velu Sinha • Before OGF and OGC, Velu worked with David Schell on a document management project whose "virtual bus” distributed architecture provided a model for geospatial interoperability, ultimately realized in OGC.   62. 62. Bob King Bob King, as VP at Camber Corp., was an OGC founder. Camber provided offices for OGC in Cambridge MA for 2 years, plus other resources. Camber helped arrange OGC’s NASA CRADA, which made the OGC’s first 3 years possible. OGC – 20 Years 1994 – 2014 62
  63. 63. Bob Moses and PCI Bob Moses, president of PCI Geomatics, understood the OGC vision from the beginning. He remained on the Board until his death in 2010. OGC – 20 Years 1994 – 2014 63 Bob was an international emissary for OGC and OGC standards. PCI Geomatics received the OGC Distinguished Member Award in 2012.   66. 66. Ulrich Boes OGC's primary patron in Europe throughout the early years was Ulrich Boes, who worked at a high level in IT at the European Commission. Ulrich is on the OGC’s Global Advisory Council. OGC – 20 Years 1994 – 2014 66
  67. 67. Jack Pellicci and Oracle Jack Pellicci, dean of the OGC Board, understood and advanced the enterprise vision for OGC standards.   68. 68. Greg Smith, Irv Buck and the NGA Greg Smith was on the OGF board before joining the US National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA), where he helped advance OGC. The NGA (while still NIMA) under Irv Buck worked with the OGC to create the "Geospatial IPT”. While at NGA, Mark Reichardt helped with this. The IPT effort helped the OGC conceptualize and implement the Interoperability Program, keystone of OGC's success.   75. 75. Roberta Balstad Roberta Balstad, head of CIESIN at Columbia University, was the first major climate scientist to become involved in the OGC. She connected OGC with the National Geophysical Data Center and other centers, positioning OGC in the international climate community.   77. 77. Bob Corell Bob Corell was assistant director of the National Science Foundation for geosciences and a principal advisor to the White House and Al Gore. A research fellow at the Kennedy School and Senior Policy Fellow at the American Meteorology Society, Bob was architect of our involvement in global climate change.   80. 80. Aki Yamaura Aki Yamaura was a division manager in Mitsubishi, in charge of their space imaging operations. He brought Mitsubishi in at Principal Membership, opening the door to the industrial and research community in Japan. His advice was critical. OGC – 20 Years 1994 – 2014 80
  81. 81. Ulrich Neunfinger President of the Siemens Geospatial Technology division, Ulrich made Siemens our first European Principal Member. He introduced OGC to the German research community and the European policy and industrial community. OGC – 20 Years 1994 – 2014 81
  82. 82. Cliff Kottman OGC – 20 Years 1994 – 2014 82 Cliff Kottman became active in the OGC very early while employed at Intergraph. He then joined OGC staff as Chief Scientist. A brilliant and imaginative technologist and mathematician as well as a superb teacher, he earned the admiration of all who worked with him.

  84. 84. David Maidment OGC – 20 Years 1994 – 2014 84 Prof. David Maidment, University of Texas, worked with Simon Cox of CSIRO and others in Australia and Europe to forge international consensus on the OGC WaterML 2.0 standard and gain endorsement by the WMO Commission for Hydrology.
  85. 85. Simon Cox OGC – 20 Years 1994 – 2014 85 Simon Cox, Research Scientist at CSIRO in Australia, has has provided extraordinary technical leadership over many years in many OGC working groups and committees. In addition, he helped align the work of OGC and ISO and promoted OGC in Australia.
  86. 86. Doug Nebert OGC – 20 Years 1994 – 2014 86 Doug Nebert, Clearinghouse Coordinator at the FGDC, has been an intellectual leader in many OGC activities, led OGC Catalog standards work, and advanced global awareness of OGC. He helped create the OGC Interoperability program.

Jeff de La Beaujardière, at NASA and later at NOAA, made key technical contributions, earning a Gardels Award.
