Build your band of heroes
Disruption is coming and Canada
is not prepared...
Artificial intelligence, advanced robotics and
collaborative connected platforms are about
to change the way we live and do business.
In fact, only
of Canadian firms are doing enough
to cultivate awareness of changing technologies
and promote cultures of innovation.
Who will save the rest of us?
We call them the Super Seven,
or more simply The Innovators:
Why, the heroes!
These innovators are united in the fight against
Captain Complacent, who stands stubbornly
in the way of action and progress flanked by
his two henchmen, Ignorance and Inertia.
While individually powerful, none
of the Seven alone can defeat the
forces of complacency.
With the Super Seven on the job,
disruption becomes constructive.
They deliver not just defence, but transformation!
The Sensor has incredible
intuition and is hyper-sensitive
to the world around her. She
defines her own path, explores
all possibilities and brings the
best ideas back to the team.
The Sensor is gifted with...
• Diverse and critical thinking.
• The ability to connect the abstract
to the concrete.
• The ability to generate a million ideas.
Despite these powers, Sadie is
• Letting her constant stream of ideas
distract other members of the team.
• Showing far more interest in those
ideas than in acting on them.
The key to managing her contributions
is to be patient and hear her out. She
works especially well in tandem with...
A bit of a mystery to some, it’s
nevertheless clear that without
the Creator, the best solutions
often go undiscovered.

Also known as the Early
Adopter, Nouveau is a
pioneer at the frontier of
time. He tracks down secrets
from the future – received
sometimes with fanfare,
sometimes with resistance.
Nouveau faces this challenge
• A willingness to fail as he seeks out
risk and pilot projects.
• Access to the latest technologies.
He does, however, have a flaw...
• The Early Adopter can lack empathy
for those who struggle to embrace
his futuristic solutions.
While Brave Nouveau is neither the
Creator nor the Scale Builder, he gets
the ball rolling, inspiring in particular...
Connector is the type to
hang out at hack-a-thons,
developing relationships and
assembling teams of people
to spark innovation. He also
encourages Sadie Sensor,
preventing her good ideas
from going to waste.
In his arsenal?
• The power of communication.
Chameleon is the best of the Seven
at translating ideas.
• He is adaptive, equally at home at a
large corporate setting or a start-up
and able to put everyone else at ease.
• He pays no mind to boundaries and
is willing to challenge the rules.
• The Chameleon cannot operate in
isolation and must be active in a
network if his powers are to work at
He also gains strength working

At her best, however, she designs not

Baden Big Builder
The Builder puts it all
together, moving disruption
from the edge to the centre
to get things done.
He turns ideas into reality.
Baden Big Builder
• Collaboration. Baden synthesizes
the team, taking concepts and
scaling solutions to achieve the big
• Focusing on outcomes. He’s never
done and is always tinkering to
enhance the end result.
These strengths are, however, paired
with a critical flaw...
Baden Big Builder
• While The Builder can build anything,
he gets stuck without a blueprint.
He also has a low tolerance for
failure, which means he must be
engaged at just the right moment.
Help overcoming this weakness can
be found in...

which he has since replicated

• Having seen success with his own eyes,
he is willing to share and understands
the ripple effect of good ideas.
However, his greatest power is perhaps
also his weakness...
Marcus Mentor has failed, but he
learns from experience and turns the
scars of failure into badges of honour
– and wisdom.
None of these innovators can manage disruption on
their own. However, their powers are complementary,
compensating for each others’ weaknesses and creating
a stronger whole.
So, where’s your team?
Men and women of tomorrow
Alas, there is no “Innovator Signal” on the rooftop you can just
switch on and wait for the heroes to appear, all costumed and
fully powered, ready to do battle with Captain Complacent.
They must be your band of heroes, not just any band.
These are the archetypes, from which all variations can emerge.
Nature meets nurture
Some of them are out there for hire if you can find
them; most you will have to nurture from within.
What matters in the fight against complacency,
ignorance and inertia is that the team
performs as one.
Disruption is coming.
