  • 2. Introduction • First off, who am I? • Oceanographer at USGS. • Work primarily on the Integrated Climate-Driven Coastal Hazards Project. • Beta testers and heavy users of a bunch of Deltares software.

  • 8. A Couple SFINCS Flavors

SFINCS Flavor #1 • Focus on long period waves. • Waves with period >25 sec. applied at the boundary (from XBeach). • High Resolution. • 10-m resolution with subgridding down to 1-m. • Small domains SFINCS Flavor #2 • Focus on Hydrology • Lower Resolution. • 100-m resolution with sub gridding down to 1-m. • Large domains • Continuous timeseries runs.

SFINCS Flavors (#1) Model train: • Regional scale models (hydrodynamic and wave). • XBeach transects for nearshore transformation. • Lookup table approach with spectrum truncated at 25 second period waves. • Event selection • With some tide shifting to extend the record. • ~ 300 events selected based on TWL.

  • 12. SFINCS Flavors (#1) Lessons learned. • Even with SFINCS, high resolution can result in prohibitively long run times. • One domain took over 3 months to run…. • Domain blending can be problematic. • Complex shorelines make things... Complex.
  • 13. SFINCS Flavors (#2) • Move to county wide domains • Swap long-period waves for dynamic hydrology. • Move from storm selection to continuous timeseries simulations.
  • 14. SFINCS Flavors (#2) Lessons learned. • When considering hydrology, river bathymetry becomes critical. • And river bathymetry is generally very uncertain.
