  16. 16. Free Powerpoint Templates Page 16 Language Point In English, we usually say “to have” a pet. For example: “When I was five I had a dog.” “I’d like to have a hamster some day.” Occasionally, we say “to keep” a pet. For example: “He keeps birds.” “I kept five goldfish when I was young.” However, we almost never say “to raise” a pet. (Unless we will kill it.) He raises a cat.
  17. 17. Free Powerpoint Templates Page 17 Discuss Discuss the following questions with a partner. 1. Have you ever had a pet? Give details. 2. Would you like to have a pet? Why or why not? 3. How do you feel about people having exotic pets? 4. Is it ethical for people to have wild animals as pets? 5. What makes a responsible pet owner?
  18. 18. Free Powerpoint Templates Page 18 KEEPING EXOTIC PETS Let’s practice some listening skills by watching a short video about an unusual human-animal relationship.
  19. 19. Free Powerpoint Templates Page 19 Listening Task • We are going to watch a video about a man called Casey Anderson, who has an unusual relationship with an animal. • The animal is a grizzly bear called Brutus. • Before we begin, note down the following 5 questions:
  20. 20. Free Powerpoint Templates Page 20 Questions • Make notes and answer these questions while listening. You will be given time to discuss them when the video finishes. 1. What is their relationship? 2. How did they meet? 3. Why do you think the bear has not killed the man? 4. Why is the bear not living in the wild? 5. Describe Brutus. How does he look? What does he do? What is his situation?
  21. 21. Free Powerpoint Templates Page 21
  22. 22. Free Powerpoint Templates Page 22 COMPARING AND CONTRASTING ANIMALS In this section, we look at language for comparing two different types of animal.
  23. 23. Free Powerpoint Templates Page 23 What’s the Difference? Today we will learn how to use: – On the other hand – While – Whereas Part of Speech: – On the other hand = conjunctive adverb – While, whereas = conjunctions
  24. 24. Free Powerpoint Templates Page 24 When to Use These words or phrases have similar uses, but the grammar is not quite the same. Generally, they are used to show difference or contrast within a sentence. They have a similar meaning to some other words: • However, nevertheless, in contrast
  25. 25. Free Powerpoint Templates Page 25 On the Other Hand On the other hand is a conjunctive adverb. It is used to compare two situations or two people and to show that there is an important difference between them. Example: • Dogs need lots of attention from humans; on the other hand, cats are very independent animals.
  26. 26. Free Powerpoint Templates Page 26 While/Whereas The same idea can be expressions using the conjunctions while and whereas. Example: • While birds are common pets among old people, goldfish are more popular with children. • Women tend to like cats, whereas men prefer dogs.
  27. 27. Free Powerpoint Templates Page 27 What’s the Difference? There is an important difference between these three sentence connectors. • While and whereas are subordinating conjunctions. That means they are used in complex sentences, ie independent + dependent clause • On the other hand is a conjunctive adverb. It goes at the beginning of the second clause and is usually separated from the rest of the sentence with a comma.
  28. 28. Free Powerpoint Templates Page 28 What’s the Difference? These sentences are very similar, but use different grammar: • While/whereas dogs make wonderful pets, giving a wolf to your child is a bad idea. • Dogs are wonderful pets; on the other hand, giving a wolf to your child is a bad idea.
