•Who has worked with corporates before & what has your experience been?
•What do you want to get out of today?

Who we work with: Clients
Who we work with: Partners
Explore these two questions
1. Why do you think corporates are involved in
Corporate Social Responsibility?
2. What do you think is on offer from the
corporates?

Then Now
Today…
•Re-emergence of philanthropy – Foundations
•Demonstration of impact required
•Increased environmental awareness
•Alignment of core services with programmes
•Sustainable Development Goals?
Working with Corporates - July 2017
The cold hard facts
• Corporates donate less than 1% of their turnover (closer to 0.3% of post
tax profits)
• Corporates don’t give money easily
• Top 3 causes – community and social welfare, education, children and
young people (most money goes to education)
• Corporates tend to support causes close to their locations (as opposed to
need)
The heart warming stuff
• Corporates may not spend much comparatively but they do spend and
their money makes a difference
• Corporates are looking for sustainable partnerships with long term impact–
so once you’re in, you’re in
• Corporates are investing in success so they will support their partners to
ensure their success
We work with business to develop leaders, engage employees and
benefit customers – in ways that create positive social impact.
WE BELIEVE IN CREATING BUSINESS VALUE AND SOCIAL VALUE HAND IN HAND.

Reflections

• It’s the right thing to do
• Clients like it
• Graduates like it

Editor's Notes

  1. Three Hands Between businesses and charities All about mutual benefit 14 years Team of 5 – stable Depth vs. scale of work Natalie 2.5 years at Three Hands Background in the charity sector – philanthropy education – understanding the landscape and organisations’ support needs Role: Managing relationships with corporate clients – British Land Community Day, British Gas (next slide) Meeting with charities and social enterprises, assessing their needs and developing project briefs (e.g. Newcastle &, Manchester visits) – next slide Facilitation of projects and programmes Churchill Fellowship – USA and Colombia perspective
  2. Corporates having a sense of social responsibility of course, isn’t new: George Cadbury set up Bourneville – to give employees housing, green space and a better quality of life and this is a tradition that has continued. Titus Salt – Wool mills – Shipley – Salt built neat stone houses for his workers (much better than the slums of Bradford), wash-houses with tap water, bath-houses, a hospital and an institute for recreation and education, with a library, a reading room, a concert hall, billiard room, science laboratory and a gymnasium. The village had a school for the children of the workers, almshouses, allotments, a park and a boathouse.[3] London Bench Marking Group annual report – 2016 – 3.3billion dollars donated by 168 companies who had a combined turnover of 3.3trillion). 70% of this was cash, 18% in kind, 7% time This average of 1.04% pre tax profit given. Also seeing the rise of values driven businesses – eg Webmart
  3. It’s important to note too that different organisations are at different stages of their journey – all of the above will make up to a greater or lesser extent, an organisation’s CSR programme But it important to understand where a corporate is at – for example, a professional services firm which has aligned it’s community programmes with it’s core services is unlikely to give money to a cancer charity. However, if there is a charity of the year, chosen by staff it might be worth applying.. PWC environmentally aware, sell sustainability and client change services ( sells it) – quite rare Employee volunteering – feel good factor for employees Link between org values and employee values – want to bring whole self to work Philanthropy – giving money/donations Employee volunteering – often an amount of day per year – classic painting things badly, but could be mentoring young people Skillanthropy – skill-based volunteerism – ie donating your business skills – for example mentoring here. Often a two-way exchange Corporate sustainability – CSR – financial, environmental and social accountability as businesses – evolution of CSR – progression is slow, few businesses at the top end, but increasingly they are entering here (e.g. social enterprise/ mission-driven business) – we often use the attached wedge to talk about this trend
  4. Foundations on the rise – these are distinct from CSR programmes and are legally distinct entities. Eg PwC Foundation, EY Foundation etc – These are legally separate from org – on the rise. Look at PWCs foundation. Lloyds Foundation. Why? Alignment of core-services with sustainability programmes increasingly important as budgets are being cut – must be demonstrable business benefit for programmes SDG – https://ccbriefing.corporate-citizenship.com/2016/07/06/aligning-csr-reporting-sustainable-development-goals/ Moving from minimising negatives and reporting what they are not doing (ie number of accidents etc) to positives. Corporates have been involved in setting the SDGs as they are seen as an important part of the solution.
  5. It is hard work to work with Corporates - they require active stewardship. time intensive, they will want things from you, make sure you can deliver, possible a culture clash, how they work, can you respond quickly and with good grace Causes: Some are always in fashion (cancer, children), others are harder to touch (offending, addiction), others come and go (mental health, Alzheimer’s)
  6. Also mention that they often will promote a strong relationship to others – so in many cases other corporates are bought on board by current corporate partners. Re low spend: Economic climate means that CSR budgets are squeezed (and have been for some time) – but businesses continue to invest, increasingly donating employee skills/ time rather than money, and CSR teams are getting creative about where they get their budget from (e.g. learning and development)
  7. Our roots: A learning development business – community action as a vehicle for developing skills
  8. Talk through: British Gas Senior Volunteering programme (Community impact, reputation, employee engagement) British Gas Igniting leadership programme (Skills development, social issue learning) Aimia (Diversity and inclusion – recruitment link) TCS (Brand awareness/ reputation, access to talent)
  9. Although our focus is on “mutual benefit”, and CSR teams are increasingly challenged to demonstrate the business value / ROI of their work, there are still genuine philanthropic motives in working with charities for some businesses. Perhaps the most obvious benefit to many businesses is reputational – it could be amongst potential customers or employees. Often this is also about guarding against increased regulation, e.g. alcohol and energy – the more businesses can show that they do care about their social impact and are acting on it, the less likely regulators are to tackle them agressively. Social insight and innovation Suppliers – charities and social enterprises sell their services because there is business value to them – e.g. Mind, Alzheimer’s Society – how to better serve employees and customers facing particular challenges. Social enterprises as part of businesses’ supply chains – have to be able to compete with commercial providers, but sometimes the social credentials are also a draw for businesses – e.g. PWC
  10. People in corporates are just like you and me. They care about things and their communities. Mention that in London corporates sometimes limit their activities to the locality of their head offices – eg PwC works in Southwark and Westminster, but regionally this restriction doesn’t exist. It has a business benefit Employees like it: It attracts top talent. Employees want to bring their whole selves to work and are looking for companies where their efforts have a higher purpose, they can see their values reflected in the CSR agenda. Employees want a sense of purpose, it engages employees, and millennials want to make a difference in their work. Its not an add on like in the days of ‘volunteering schemes to paint a wall, clear a pond. So important for you to understand what they want, what they do and why? Also understand that it is a partnership – I see it as the SE or charity bringing the heart to the business – a clear sign post that shows what they care about “Graduates like it” is a theme of our work Localism is another strong thread in our projects
