I just enjoy the challenge of language learning, and if you haveany interest, this is a terrific opportunity to learn some skills that may even help you in yourstudy and ability to use study tools that include original language as part of the work. This may help you to attempt reading signs when you get to Israel. You have plenty of timebetween now and then to begin learning the Aleph Bet. Maybe you can put it on your ipod andlearn while you walk. Dont forget to begin working your way up to a 3 mile walk. -- (CouchPotato to Israel 2012).https://inotes.usw.salvationarmy.org/mail/dallen.nsf/0/$new/?OpenDocument&Form=s_P... 10/18/2011

At thismoment the US Dollar will buy 3.565 shekels, but as you know the daily rate changes all thetime. We’ll just have to wait and see what we get when we get there.Below I have the English word and the Hebrew word together so you can see what it lookslike in Hebrew. Most Hebrew words are based on three letter combinations so this is a goodexample. It will change depending upon how it is used in a sentence.Shekel lqv (In case your computer does not display correctly this is Shin, Qof, Lamed -reading right to left)Now I would like to ask some questions in case this is of interest to anyone. 1. Hebrew has both masculine and feminine gender words. Is “Shekel” masculine or feminine? 2. Shekel is what the currency for Israel is called. The shekel was originally a unit of weight in the same way that we use the “ounce”. What is the Hebrew wordhttps://inotes.usw.salvationarmy.org/mail/dallen.nsf/0/$new/?OpenDocument&Form=s_P... 10/18/2011

Or maybe you didnt ask for it, but since I didnt get enough responses Iam instituting the Study Tour Draft.Below you can see a list of days for devotions, followed by a name. Those names in SalvationArmy Navy Blue Volunteered and the rest of you were drafted!Knowing that you are ready to preach pray or pass away in a moments notice I took the liberty ofchoosing among all the delegates and choosing a day for your devotion. If you see your namebelow, then please refer to the previous email which I have included below this one so that youcan find out what your possible topics can include. Please follow the guidelines there as wellbecause we dont want anyone to have to run to a city of refuge for preaching too long. Those of you who were drafted may choose to draft someone to help you in singing, Scripturereading, pantomiming or juggling to enhance your devotions. If for some reason, you would rather not be involved in this way, we can either assign you to KPduty or extend grace and offer the spot to someone else. We have more delegates than days, sonot everyone will be able to present a devotion and it is always better to have willing participants. You can reply to me with your response indicating your willingness or not for this assignment. IfI end up with some opportunities after your replies then I will send out again for volunteersbefore re-instituting the draft. Please reply with your answer so I can complete the assignments.https://inotes.usw.salvationarmy.org/mail/dallen.nsf/0/$new/?OpenDocument&Form=s_P... 10/18/2011

NKJV__________________Our DAILY Devotion ScheduleTheme: Jesus was HereThink of all the places you have been where you have seen those annoying inscriptions wheresomeone wrote their name and the words: “was here”. As we travel along to see the many places thatwe know Jesus may have also visited perhaps we can acknowledge His visit to that place and what Hedid, or something about the Old Testament history of the place. If you would like to present a devotionyou may want to focus on an event in either testament. After choosing the day, then you can chooseone of the locations for your subject. Don’t worry about telling us all the history… that’s what we arepaying our guide to do. We just want a 5 minute devotion that will help us start or continue our day.Following is a list of where we will go. Please choose the day you would like to present a devotion.Choose from the places we’ll visit on that day a topic for your devotion. Then you can send me yourtitle if you wish within a month from now. I’ll assign the devotions based on first come first served, followed by the draft. There are not enough days for all of us to present devotions but there will bereadings that we will need everyone to be prepared for. Choose the date now… Send me the title later. The attached file repeats these instructions and gives you the places we will be each day.(See attached file: YOUR DAILY Devotion schedule.docx)For a reminder with more detail of the daily travels you may want to refer to this which some ofyou have already sent to your electronic reader.Attached here for your convenience.(See attached file: YOUR DAILY ITINERARY for Israel 2012.pdf)God bless!Jeff Martin, MajorEducation SecretaryPs 111:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; A good understanding have all thosewho do His commandments. Shopping in IsraelIf you are like me, you have probably bought a bunch of souvenirs on a trip and later wondered why. There are tons of souvenir items to buy, but you might be better off thinking about your purchasesnow. Take a look at some websites that show pictures of souvenirs and other wares that are offered inIsrael and think about what you really want as a special souvenir on this trip. It may be that you wantsomething that is a work of art in gold, silver or olive wood for example. Try to narrow it down inyour own mind and make sure you will have room in your suitcase. Decide how much you areprepared to spend on the item.https://inotes.usw.salvationarmy.org/mail/dallen.nsf/0/$new/?OpenDocument&Form=s_P... 10/18/2011
  45. 45. Page 45 of 69The next step may be a little uncomfortable, but with practice it can be fun as well. Are you ready to Haggle? 1 Approach any sale in Israel with a mindset to haggle. Sometimes people from Westernenvironments assume that prices are fixed and whatever price a vendor mentions the first time is therock bottom price. But this is not so. Israel, like most countries of the Middle East, depends onbargaining to do business, so approach almost any sales situation ready to negotiate. 2 Know what you want and how much you are willing to pay for it. Set yourself an ideal price and aprice you find reasonable for the product you want. This way, you will know where to begin yourprice negotiation, and also where to end it. 3 Ask the price before you tell your price. A vendor will be trying to gauge if youre a savvyshopper or a sucker, so begin by getting the vendor to quote the price. If its much higher than yourideal price, just say no but dont walk away. Chances are the vendor will ask what price you werethinking or wanting which is your cue to stop to think for a few seconds and then quote your idealprice. 4 Be persistent with what you want. If the vendor is negotiating in the area of your ideal orreasonable price then haggle until you reach an agreement. 5 If the vendor will not approach your reasonable price, walk away. Be explicit about your actionsby telling him that its too much for you. Dont try to trick him by saying you saw a better price inanother stand at the market because he probably knows all the local prices and bargains. Simplyinform him that his price is too high, walk away and be sure to walk past the stall again after aboutfifteen or twenty minutes. Chances are he will call you back to offer a price closer to what you want. 6 Remember its just business. Keeping a cool head is the best way to haggle at a market in Israel, asin other places. So dont get angry or insulted but keep a friendly, business-like attitude toward thetransaction in order to get the best bargain. You have your purchase, you have paid for it, and you have paid the tax. Don’t forget, that youmay be able to get a refund on your taxes before you leave Israel.VAT RefundPurchases can be made in Israeli Shekels, U.S. dollars or Euros. Tourists who have purchased itemswith a value exceeding $100 (including VAT) in stores that are registered with the Ministry ofTourism or in stores participating in the VAT-refund plan are entitled to a refund of VAT when theyleave the country. Stores that offer VAT refund service have a special sign.To receive VAT refund, ensure that you get a receipt with a list of all the items you have purchasedand details of the purchaser. The receipt and purchases must be put into a sealed bag. Tourists mustthen go to the “Change Place” at Ben Gurion airport or other exit port. If you wish to send the itemsthat you purchased with your luggage, you must declare the purchase at the security check, and presentyour passport, flight ticket, purchases and receipts at the counter. The attendant will open the bag, examine the contents, sign the receipt, and refund the VAT in any currency minus a commission. 46. 46. Page 46 of 69VAT refund can also be sent to your address abroad for an additional charge. There is no VAT refund for the following items: food, drinks, tobacco products, electrical appliances, cameras, film or other photography equipment.Additional information about VAT refunds is available on the "Change place Financial Services"website:http://www.cpl.co.il/English/index.asp or at 03-975-4020.View VAT refund form.Additional things to remember.Never insinuate that the vendor’s products are substandard in order to try and negotiate a better deal. Ifit were substandard you wouldn’t be interested.Do not ask the guide in front of the vendor if that is a good deal. The guide has to develop goodrelations with many of the vendors they encounter. Let’s say you want to buy a silver Seder plate or apottery Roman lamp. Ask the guide ahead of time where a good place is to buy that kind of item alongour travels. The guide will point out a good place and may be able to give you some guidance onprices. Use the haggling guide above and have fun with the experience and enjoy your purchase.Don’t forget to say “Todah” (Thank you) or if you know the vendor is Arabic, you might like tosay…”Shokran” (Shook ran).Shalom!God bless!Jeff Martin, MajorEducation SecretaryPs 111:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; A good understanding have all thosewho do His commandments. The attached file repeats these instructions and gives you the places we will be each day.https://inotes.usw.salvationarmy.org/mail/dallen.nsf/0/$new/?OpenDocument&Form=s_P... 10/18/2011

I dont have the exact times yet, but the flight will go from LAX toNewark, NJ and then from Newark to Tel-Aviv. The return flight will be from Tel-Aviv to Newark, and then Newark to LAX.I dont believe we change planes in Newark, but just pick up more passengers. For this reason, the tour company told me that there is not a possibility of making any other flight connectionsfrom Newark. When you leave Tel-Aviv you must continue to LAX.If you plan to do some other travel you will need to do so from Tel-Aviv. You will then return toTel-Aviv to catch the same flight (on a different day) back to LAX.I hope that makes sense to you... It does make sense to me, but I may not have explained itwell. As long as we are talking about travel, I have included an attachment below that I think you willenjoy. It is just something fun.(See attached file: talmudic logic.docx)https://inotes.usw.salvationarmy.org/mail/dallen.nsf/0/$new/?OpenDocument&Form=s_P... 10/18/2011
