    2. 2. Who was Charles Dickens?• Charles Dickens was an English writer and social critic who to some people is regarded as the greatest writer of all time. He is also the creator of some of the most memorable fictional characters. 2
    3. 3. Why is he so famous?• Charles Dickens is so famous for his narrative writing. He created many famous characters that people still remember today. 3
    4. 4. When did he live/write?• Charles Dickens was born on the 7th of February 1812 and died June 9th 1870 so he was alive for around 58 years. He started writing at the age of 17 as a reporter, after a few years he managed to embark on a career in journalism. His first successful novel was The Pickwick Papers, in 1836, when he was 24, this enabled him to become a full-time novelist. 4
    5. 5. Where did he live?• Charles Dickens was born in Portsmouth, Hampshire but spent most of his life in and around London. 5
    6. 6. What did he do?• Apart from writing books Charles Dickens worked in a warehouse that handled shoe polish when he was 12 after his father was jailed. He also worked as a office boy at an attorney, a shorthand reporter in the courts and later as parliamentary and newspaper reporter. 6
    7. 7. How did he become famous?• Charles Dickens wrote novels which contained stories of ordinary people. Many of his stories were about the hardships people often faced during the early/mid 19th century. 7
    8. 8. How do people still know about him?• We still know about Charles Dickens because of his very famous books he used to write. His books give us an idea of growing up in his time and the difficulties he faced. 8
    9. 9. Why are his stories/novels so famous/loved?• Dickens stories came out in weekly or monthly parts. Each month people could read a new chapter in the story.Readers like a good story, with interesting characters. Dickens was very clever at making up characters. People all over the world know Oliver Twist, Scrooge and David Copper field, even if they have not read the books in which these characters appear. Because of this people read his books and told others and younger children about them. 9
