  6. 6. sales@dhands.com.au 02 9634 6640 www.dhands.com.au Frequently Asked Questions Q: Which wattage LED should I use to replace my existing lights? Just like any properly designed lighting system, the correct wattage will depend on a few factors that all lighting suppliers should know and be able to use to recommend the correct fittings for you. However some good rules of thumb are: Existing Lamp Type Replacement Ratio Halogen LED 5 to 1 Incandescent 7 to 1 CFL 2 to 1Linear Fluorescent Discharge Lamps (Such as MH, MV, Induction) The above rules of thumb are just a guide, but always remember that BIGGER IS NOT ALWAYS BETTER, an over-lit room is just as uncomfortable as an under-lit room. A correctly selected lamp will light your space to the appropriate level, and keep your energy use to a minimum. Q: How much more efficient are LED lights than traditional lamps? Compared to Halogen lamps, around 80% less power is used to generate a comparable amount of light. Compared to traditional incandescent lamps, up to 90% less energy is used to generate a similar amount of light. Q: Are LED lamps bright enough to replace my existing fittings? LED lamps are now bright enough and cost effective enough to be used to replace almost any existing fitting in the home or business. We are now seeing much brighter LED and higher wattage lights than ever before. Unfortunately, in some cases, people are now purchasing LED lamps that are overpowered for the lamp that they are replacing, resulting in higher energy use than required. A 16W LED lamp still uses 60% more power than a 10W LED lamp. Q: Can I select the appropriate LED light for a specific application using the lumen output of the fitting? Not entirely, the lumen output by itself is only an indication of how efficient the lamp or light fitting is. The most relevant way to select a light fitting is to use the lux (illuminance) and area that will be lit at a particular distance. In order to do this, you need to take into account both the beam angle and lumen output of the light in question to see if the appropriate lighting is achieved.
