Getting started within the
Ubuntu Community
Dani Llewellyn (diddledani) she/her
07/11/2022 Dani Llewellyn 2
My Background
●
Linux user since ~1997-8
●
Web, Desktop, and Server dev/admin experience
●
Windows, macOS, and Linux
●
Limited contributions between 2005/6-2016
●
Major contributions 2016+
●
Primary contributions to Snaps/Snapcraft, WSL2, and Ubuntu Mate
●
Ubuntu Member February 2018
●
Ubuntu Membership Board September 2018-present
●
Microsoft MVP primarily for WSL-related community work
07/11/2022 Dani Llewellyn 3
Who wants to contribute?
07/11/2022 Dani Llewellyn 4
First steps to get involved
●
Create an Ubuntu Single Sign-on account at
https://login.ubuntu.com
07/11/2022 Dani Llewellyn 5
Join a Local Community (LoCo)
●
Listed at https://loco.ubuntu.com/teams
●
Click through to your choice of LoCo
●
Click “Join this team”
●
Follow instructions on Launchpad.net page that loads
●
Once joined, try out their IRC for real-time communication, or
mailing list, if they list such
07/11/2022 Dani Llewellyn 6
Join the Ubuntu Discourse
●
https://discourse.ubuntu.com/
●
Used for discussion of overall project direction
●
Specifically *not* a support forum
●
Several Ubuntu projects use Discourse for documentation
collaboration
●
Docs should all be set to “wiki” mode – any logged-in user should
be able to edit
07/11/2022 Dani Llewellyn 7
IRC (LiberaChat) real-time communication
●
Ubuntu uses IRC for real-time communication between and
within teams
●
We use Libera Chat: https://libera.chat/
●
Join with any IRC client using the hostname irc.libera.chat and ssl/tls
port 6697
●
Popular IRC clients include:
●
IRCCloud (paid; web-based)
●
The Lounge (free; web-based; self-hosted)
●
HexChat (free; desktop app)
●
Konversation (free; desktop app)
07/11/2022 Dani Llewellyn 8
Now we get to contribute...
07/11/2022 Dani Llewellyn 9
How did I get started?
●
Long-time lurker in IRC
●
Saw Snapcraft rise out of the ashes of Ubuntu Phone
●
Found an app I used regularly to create a Snap Package of
●
Learnt as much as I could while packaging the app
●
Published the Snapped app
●
Started publishing more Snapped apps
●
Snowball ensued!!!
07/11/2022 Dani Llewellyn 10
Contribution Area: Writing
●
Documentation always needs improving and updating
●
Locations for editable docs:
●
Ubuntu Discourse: https://discourse.ubuntu.com/c/documentation
●
Snapcraft Forum: https://forum.snapcraft.io/c/doc
●
Ubuntu Wiki: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/
●
Ubuntu Wiki requires you be a member of ~ubuntu-wiki-editors on
Launchpad.net
●
Request access at
https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-wiki-editors/+contactuser
07/11/2022 Dani Llewellyn 11
Contribution Area: Art & Design
●
The primary theme for Ubuntu, YARU, can always use design and artwork
help
●
See their GitHub at https://github.com/ubuntu/yaru
●
Each of the flavours (Ubuntu Mate, Ubuntu Unity, Kubuntu, Ubuntu Budgie,
Ubuntu Kylin, Ubuntu Studio, Xubuntu…) regularly need new artwork and
artwork refreshes
●
Especially as each 6 month release cycle draws to a close
●
The flavours and their supporting projects would appreciate design input for
their User Interfaces
●
One such example I can immediately think of is the Ubuntu Mate Welcome app
●
There are many more though!
07/11/2022 Dani Llewellyn 12
Contribution Area: Technical Support
●
AskUbuntu: https://askubuntu.com/
●
Ubuntu Forums:
https://ubuntuforums.org/
●
IRC: #ubuntu on LiberaChat
●
The Ubuntu Hideout on Discord
(App available from Ubuntu
Software as a Snap Package)
●
Invite Link: https://discord.gg/ubuntu
07/11/2022 Dani Llewellyn 13
Contribution Area: Organisation
●
Your LoCo meetups might need help organising
●
Triaging bugs on Launchpad.net to ensure correct project
assignment and any duplicates are marked appropriately
●
Filling any missing information in bugs on Launchpad.net to
help the developers narrow down the root cause (shouldn’t
require coding skills)
07/11/2022 Dani Llewellyn 14
Contribution Area: Promotion
●
Creating & posting promotional material locally or on social
media
●
Advocating among your peers
●
Writing blog posts and articles
●
Produce a regular podcast
●
Gap in market since the Ubuntu Podcast ended
●
Don’t reuse the Ubuntu Podcast brand as that belongs to the
presenters on the original Ubuntu Podcast; don’t overshadow their
unique style and legacy
07/11/2022 Dani Llewellyn 15
Contribution Area: Programming/Coding
●
Create Snap Packages that are
missing from the Store
●
Debug and fix bugs on
Launchpad.net
●
Chat with Ubuntu Developers in IRC
to determine unfilled needs:
●
#ubuntu-devel, #ubuntu-server, and
#ubuntu-desktop on LiberaChat
among other channels
07/11/2022 Dani Llewellyn 16
Gamification: Ubuntu Accomplishmenets
●
An old project created by Jono Bacon & Stuart Langridge
●
Died a decade ago when Ubuntu One cloud storage went away
●
I’ve resurrected and rewritten it
●
Very rough edges right now – contributions welcome
●
Follow installation instructions at
https://snapcraft.io/ubuntu-accomplishments
●
Once installed it runs in the background – doesn’t need the
app open

permitting)
