Ken Robinson: How schools kill creativity Uses humour, tells jokes, anecdotes. “Shakespeare was in someone’s English class” Engages audience: “do you?”, “am I right?”, “is that right?”, “isn’t that true?” 3 Points: o Human creativity, o We have no idea about the future, o children have extraordinary capacities. CREATIVITY IS AS IMPORTANT AS LITERACY Kids aren’t frightened of being wrong – if you are not prepared to be wrong, you won’t come up with anything original. – by the time they become adults they’ve lost that capacity. Hierarchy in Education Mathematics, Languages Humanities Arts (Art and Music more important than Drama and Dance) Public education is to produce University Professors – Live in their heads. Education was developed in the 19 century to meet the needs of industrialism. Academic ability is seen as a measure of intelligence. Intelligence is Diverse, Dynamic, Distinct. Creativity is the process of having original ideas that have use. Women can multi-task. Dame Gillian Barbara Lynne, DBE was very active as a child, people who couldn’t sit still, people who had to move to think. Problems with ADHD Educate the whole being.
