Argentina <ul><li>Immigration caused Buenos Aires to become most prosperous area of Argentina </li></ul><ul><li>Juan Perón comes to power and introduced unions for the working class </li></ul><ul><li>Military Regime under Perón improves the working class for a time </li></ul><ul><li>Perón purchased railroads from Britain and forced land owners to sell property to the state to pay for its industry improvements </li></ul><ul><li>Opposing military regime bombs Perón’s office and he goes into exile </li></ul>

Brazil <ul><li>Brazil has amazing potential with its abundance of natural and agricultural resources </li></ul><ul><li>The introduction of the auto industry fuels the creation of many other industries </li></ul><ul><li>Military Government accepted no dissension </li></ul><ul><li>Censorship of press, musicians, carnival </li></ul><ul><li>During Brazil’s greatest oppression it receives largest growth </li></ul><ul><li>Gap between classes grows </li></ul>

Brazil <ul><li>Brazil borrows massive amounts of money from foreign investors to maintain growth rates </li></ul><ul><li>In 1980 the biggest strike in the countries history happens with 150,000 workers striking for 41 days </li></ul><ul><li>Huge debt forced Brazil into recession </li></ul><ul><li>4,500,000 protestors demand Democracy </li></ul><ul><li>Cruzado Plan put into effect and fails </li></ul><ul><li>Inflation soars and class gap is one of largest in the world </li></ul>

Colombia <ul><li>The only South American country to have coasts on both the Pacific and Caribbean </li></ul><ul><li>Has the greatest opportunity to connect South America to the rest of the world </li></ul><ul><li>Protected by Cartagena </li></ul><ul><li>Cartagena was supposed to be the protection for the entire country from the outside world </li></ul>

Columbia <ul><li>The Andes mountain ranges split the country into culturally distinct areas </li></ul><ul><li>60% of the population lives in the poorest of the areas </li></ul><ul><li>80% of the population is now urban compared to 1930’s when 80% was urban </li></ul><ul><li>Most land is controlled by feudal oligarchs who oversee production </li></ul>

Columbia <ul><li>Three main government groups vying for power </li></ul><ul><li>-The government and official military </li></ul><ul><li>-Rebels controlling much of the drug trafficking </li></ul><ul><li>-Other paramilitary groups </li></ul><ul><li>Civil war caused by the three powers displaced 3.5 million people </li></ul><ul><li>Cocoa leaf and cocaine production is at world leading levels because of drug traffickers </li></ul><ul><li>US forced FARC to move closer to boarders </li></ul><ul><li>This did not solve any drug problems, just moved them </li></ul>

Columbia <ul><li>US Rangers formed a Columbian Ranger division with US military training </li></ul><ul><li>Outside monetary investments into the drug war decreased the output </li></ul><ul><li>Decreased output saw an increase in terrorist bombings </li></ul><ul><li>Drugs being the most profitable export, the traffickers are not willing to go down without a fight </li></ul>
