2. What is Viruddhaahara?
• Viruddha = opposite
• Ahara=food
• Viruddhaahara are the food combinations those which produce harmful effects on the body.
• What makes them harmful?
• They may be paraspara guna viruddha (mutually opposite in qualities),
• They may be samyoga viruddha (May exert undesirable effects, when combined in certain
proportion.)
• Desha, kaala, matra, tatha svabhava viruddha -May have unwanted effect if consumed at wrong
place, wrong time, wrong quantity etc.
3. • Hostile on the deha and dhatus(tissues).
• Owing to their antagonistic properties they may exert undesirable effects on deha (body) and
Dhatu(tissues).
• They trigger the dosha – disturb the agni (cellular metabolism) – without getting expelled.
• They settle and hence are cytotoxic in due course.
• Continuous and long term use is harmful.
4. Types
• Desha (place) Viruddha- French fries, Pizzas, Tacos in India, Alcohol in deserts.
• Kala Viruddha – Coke during summer season, Ice creams in winter season
• Agni Viruddha – Eating pop corns, chips when extremely hungry.
• Matra (quantity) Viruddha – Cow ghee and honey in equal quantity
• Satmya (wholesome) Viruddha – person habituated to non spicy diet imposed with spicy foods
• Dosha Viruddha – Eating curd rice by Kapha prakruti person.
• Sanskar (mode of preparation) Viruddha – Heat processed – Cold processed – food additives – “ vishavat
bhavet”
• Veerya (potency) Viruddha –Cheese, Mayo, Milk and fish, Citrus fruits like lemon and tea.
• Koshtha Viruddha – Barbeque, Pizzas, baked foods by a person with constipated bowel.
5. • Avastha (state of health) Viruddha – Daily consumption of alcohol by person debilitated involving in laborious
work. Taking curd during night after sleep.
• Kram (sequence) Viruddha – Eating food without appetite. Fruit salad ice cream after heavy meals. Drinking
cold water after long exposure to hot sun, women taking bath soon after cooking.
• Parihar Viruddha – Coke after Manchurian, samosa. Drinking cold water after hot tea.
• Upachar (treatment) Viruddha – Drinking cold water after steam bath, snehapana.
• Paak (cooking) Viruddha – Barbeque, chips, half boiled eggs.
• Samyoga (combination) Viruddha – Banana milkshakes, Strawberry milkshakes, Gutka.
• Hriday Viruddha – Subjective. Eg: bittergourd, snake gourd to children.
• Sampad (richness of quality) Viruddha – overripened fruits .. Enzymated browning
• Vidhi (rules for eating) Viruddha – Eating food while watching mobile or tv.
6. Change in diet in the last decade

• How many days exactly can I live without eating fast foods, baked food,
cool drinks??
• Can I live for a month without reheating things kept in the fridge?
• How many times do I use the same oil for “deep frying”?
7. Action of viruddha on body
• Viruddha ahara ------ Agni ------Tridosha -----ama----Rasa------Shukra
dhatu.
• Oxidative Stress ------- overproduction of free radicals -------
accumulation on macromolecules like lipids, DNA, proteins -----
chronic diseases
8. Resultants of Viruddha Ahara
• षाण्ढ्यान्ध्यवीसर्पदकोदराणाां ववस्फोटकोन्धमादभगन्धदराणाम्|
मूर्च्ापमदा्मानगलग्रहाणाां र्ाण्ढ्वामयस्यामववषस्य वव|
• ककलासकु ष्ठग्रहणीगदानाां शोथाम्लवर्त्तज्वरर्ीनसानाम् | सन्धतानदोषस्य
तथव मृत्योववपरुद्धमन्धनां प्रवदन्न्धत हेतुम्
Rasa dhatu(shotha,Andhya, jwara, udara, amlapitta) – Rakta
dhatu(pandu,kushta, visarpa, visphota) – mamsa(bhagandhara),
meda(admana,amavisha), asthi(kushta, visarpa), majja(unmada),
shukra(shandhya)
All the dhatus in the hierarchy will be affected.
So is vascular tissue, nerve tissue, connective tissue and the epithelial
tissue will be affected.

• Improve the agni, bala – by adopting unctuous, little quantity, timely
food, exercises.

क्रमश्वात्रोर्हदश्यते||३६||
• प्रक्षेर्ार्वये ताभयाां क्रमः र्ादाांशशको भवेत ्| एकान्धतरां ततश्वो्वं
द््यन्धतरां त्र्यन्धतरां तथा||३७|
• क्रमेणार्चवता दोषाः क्रमेणोर्चवता गुणाः| सन्धतो
यान्धत्यर्ुनभापवमप्रकम््या भवन्न्धत व||३८||
• By slowly and gradually giving up unwholesome practices and
by increasing the wholesome practices in proper sequence, the
unwholesome practices do not reoccur and the wholesome
practices are fully adopted.
