  4. 4. First of all, it is a kind of work, a labor requiringlarge amounts of time and resources. This labor iscompensated as such, by a salary. Second, it is adisciplinary activity, that is, it is governed byconventions of interpretation and protocols ofresearch developed over many decades. Thesetechniques take years to acquire . . . Third,professional reading is vigilant; it stands back fromthe experience of pleasure in reading [...] so that theexperience of reading does not begin and end inthe pleasure of consumption, but gives rise to acertain sustained reflection. And fourth, this readingis a communal practice.
