Have a nice trip!
o A demo!
Questions?
o Answered or taken in for future
4. The natural way…
The natural way is the way we all originally learnt our first
languages; automatically and easily…
o We heard, we watched, we listened, we acted, we spoke, they
appreciated
The natural method of learning requires environment,
interaction, time, appreciation, and patience…
6. ELT methods
English language learning (teaching) is no different from learning
something else
We learn by using the 5 senses or 6 (some believe there are even more
than). Primarily we use the input devices to receive the information
and out put devices to produce results (of course after the data has
been processed in the brain).
There are many popular methods and approaches to ELT, e.g.,:
o Direct method
o Audio-lingual method
o Grammar translation method
o TPR/ info gap/ problem solving/ jigsaw (reading)
7. methods and approaches to ELT
Communicative/ natural approach:
o Communication is given importance and language learning is focussed from fluency to accuracy
Grammar translation method:
o systematic, orthodox, reading focussed, translation exercises, grammar rules, vocabulary lists,
text books. Before and during 1950- early 60’s
Direct method:
o Natural way, like children learnt their first language, speaking focussed. 1960-80 and still used
Audio-lingual method:
o No rules-just habits, listen and repeat. Questions both GT and DM. since 1960’s
There can be many like:
o The silent way, TPR, info gap, learning community, problem solving, task based, immersion
learning, jigsaw (reading) and suggestopedia
8. So how do we do it?
Considering the ground realities and students' learning
Let the students learn immersed in communication
naturally by the way of direct method combined with
audio-lingual, TPR, and any other method that is relevant
and useful..
The SST Method!
9. The P-P-P cycle:
What makes a lesson boring?
What can we do to make it interesting?
What are generally the three parts of a lesson?
What is the purpose of a language lesson?
During which part do you correct the most?
What are the three qualities of a good presentation?
Which of the three stages of a lesson should last the longest?
Why should the teacher’s control be the least during performance?
10. The PPP Cycle of a lesson
Presentation:
o Give the students the new language items like function, grammar, or expressions
o Execute a planned presentation on a variety of methods like demo, audio, video,
reading, board etc. The TTT vs STT 50/50
Practice -1 & 2:
o Making them practice with you under control through easy action, speaking and
writing where most of the mistakes should be corrected (positively)
o Making them practice with you under less control with some choice and only
guidance and correction. TTT vs STT 20/80 and 10/90
Performance:
o The output session where they speak, write, read aloud, role-play or present
without your help. TTT vs STT 00/100 (followed by a quick general feedback
and a review in the next classes)
11. Using the resource:Input: to look around, at the board,
picture. Read from page 35, your notes,
listen to the teacher, listen to song, an
audio recording, watch a video
Interaction: think, scan,
skim, discuss, question,
infer, analyze,
Interpretation: to share, present, tell, show,
feedback, draw, compose, write, write and
write…

Editor's Notes
The presentation is a part of on-going ELT training program at sstpsr.edu.pk with a frequency of an hour session every Saturday… There could be a better sequence but since we had to start the program in a hurry, and it was need based according to the observations we are beginning with a couple of demo lessons so that all ELT’s are on the same page as to how to let the students interact with the reading text…
The natural way reiterated. We hope to remember it during teaching. Praise your students
Reminder of the overlap. They are separated for ease, but they remain integrated. Fluency to accuracy!
A single remedy or a combination that works for all. This is OUR method, and yours!
