About the School Response to the Idea of “Design Gangotri public school is a low income Private for Change” School. Located in Gautam Vihar, Seelampur P.O, East When students first learned about the Delhi concept of Design for Change, they DESIGN FOR CHANGE School runs from 1st to 8th Grade. were thrilled. Co-ed School with both English & Hindi Medium Realizing the endless possibilities Over 600 students are studying in the School. to create a change both inside & outside the School, students at Facts about the School & its premises Gangotri Public School School is situated amidst the narrow curvy roads brainstormed & came up with lots of Gautam Vihar. of ideas Surrounded by complete filth & dirt with the usual squalor of a low income area. School lacks a library, playground & a platform for extra-curricular activities.

POWER OF CHANGE ! One of the biggest change that happened at Gangotri Public School was the change in the mindsets of the students. Reading about hundreds of stories of change across the Globe, students changed their mindset from “Can I” to “I Can”. Since students never got an opportunity to voice their ideas to make a change , they were excited & pumped with energy to impact the School & their Community. Over 75 Ideas across different groups of students poured in within a week of introducing the Design for Change Contest.
SOME OF THE INTERESTING IDEAS THAT CAMEUP FROM DIFFERENT STUDENTS !Ideas to Impact the Ideas to Impact the SchoolCommunity Create a cleanliness drive across Raise funds by selling Old newspapers / write various galis in Gautam Vihar.(Speak letters to NGO’s / highly established Private to MCD about the overflowing Schools in the City for creating a library for the drainage issues in the Community) School. Campaign against Child Labour & Form 3-4 Groups & create a platform for Extra- create awareness about Education Curricular Activities. Raise funds & get the most financially Since GPS does not have a backward students in the Community playground, students came up with an Idea of to join School. introducing Indoor Games like Chess / Sudoko /Puzzles & Small outdoor games like Kabaddi Help unemployed women to find , Coco etc which can be played inside the opportunities for part time Jobs. School. Speak to doctors & set up a Medical One dustbin per class . Camp for the people in the Set up a small Science Lab. Community. Students came with an idea to Convince teachers to Introduce activity based learning in their curriculum for deeper understanding of the practical aspects.

STORY OF CHANGEAfter so days of discussion , students decided to work on few Ideas to impact theSchool. Even though there were endless possibilities to impact the Community,students stuck to their School after realizing the need to bring change in theirown School.The most important pledge that students took before working on the idea was tomake sure that it is sustainable ! Any idea which is not sustainable doesn’t makean impact.Finally, a team of 15 Students were formed to do the groundwork on the Ideas forDesign for Change Contest . Instead of choosing a single Idea, students took thechallenge of choosing 2 Ideas to impact their School.1) Raise funds & form a small library for the School:- This was a big challenge asthe School & the students were part of a low income area in East Delhi & most of thepeople in the community were financially backward.2)Set up a platform for Indoor games & Extra-Curricular ActivitiesGPS was facing a huge space constraint & it was very tough to find out a place forIndoor Games / Activities. It was also tough to change the mindsets of most of thestudents to make them participate in Extra-curricular activities.
Students sold newspapers / old utensils / raised funds from their neighbours , relatives & from the community. DESIGN FOR CHANGE When they were falling short of racks / shelves to keep their books, they tied ropes along the walls & pined the smaller books !
